Am I right in thinking someone on here runs a narrowboat with an electric motor. I'm looking for an idea how expensive it would be to replace my knackered diesel engine with an electric motor. Also the pros and cons of the set up. All advice welcome.

Yes, he has a barge about 57x12ft running on electric. Lynch motor and a lot of Valence LiFePO4 batteries.
I think it's mainly a DIY job. Certainly interesting to know how much it has cost to get it all working.
It's the way to go but I think that we still have some range questions and you probably need to cover the cabin top in solar panels.

I reckon the way to do it on a narrow boat is to put a drive pod in the rudder and leave the existing engine in the boat.
That way you don't have all your eggs in one basket. Not sure how well the boat will handle with a pod in the rudder but the type of thing I would consider is something like the Epropulsion Pod 3.0kw unit.
It might make the handling a bit odd but I suspect if you take it easy and put proper durable bearings on the rudder post it could work nicely at least for slow speeds.
The thrust might make steering heavy but I think the idea would be that when you want to move the rudder you would at the same time reduce the motor speed to take the loading off a bit.
It would be a different way of handling the boat but might be quite interesting.

Maybe when CRT get a round tuit and change the law to sort out all the problems they should include a speed limit decrease. Max speed 2mph.
This would take out all sorts of agro problems and encourage people to just glide around quietly and economically enjoying the scenery more.
Also make electric boats more sensible than diesel boats.
Could work ?
Enforcement to be carried out by men (and women) with big guns on bridges.

Peter gets away with it because his boat has lots of roof space and I gather also lots of room for many batteries. And a nice big jenny too...plus he doesn't go that far...

He may have a mooring with elastic trickery on it.
If not that is another reason to keep the diesel engine.
(In my head) you could run a whacking great big alternator off the prop shaft to charge the batteries for the rudder pod. When you get to a lock stop engine and use the rudder pod for the man 'oovering.
Could work well if there was space on the tailshaft to add a couple of Plummer blocks and a decent pulley.
I suppose one could put electric inside but I think the pod will be a lot quieter which will be pleasant.
Also having separate pieces of equipment for charging and propulsion gives some redundancy.
I may be atypical but to me the main object of having electric drive is that it is as quiet as possible. A noisy electric drive seems pointless (unless it is entirely powered by solar in which case the cost benefit is interesting).

I bet he is going to say it's all a waste of time and just causes things like this to happen.
