That 8kv motor looks well interesting for playing with. Or get him to do one slightly higher maybe 12kv.

peterboat have you any examples of the 48v direct drive motor you were thinking of? There is a company called Alien Power System who do a range of Very Nice brushless motors from small remote control aircraft through ebikes. Escooters to electric cars. I reckon one of their motors could be quite a nice thing to put in a boat. Here is an example alienpowersystem.com/product-category/brushless-motors/200mm/200mm diameter 50rpm/volt. Up to 45kw. There is the same with 8rpm/volt but they would need a huge propeller or high voltage. These are not shocking prices £1400. Would need the suitable controller and of course a load of batteries. There are loads of other motors on his site. Amazing powerhouses these little things. Real beasts. The Very Nice range is quite impressive.

In this particular instance greenman has indicated that they are on the lowland canals and that there is charging infrastructure available. I don't think electric is all that good for people who want to go far and wide on the CRT waters but in other situations it could actually be quite a wise move.

If fannying about drinking beer in a canoe is an aspirational lifestyle then it's perfect.

If fannying about drinking beer in a canoe is an aspirational lifestyle then it's perfect. Also probably quite a good option for someone with a canal boat used where there is regular and reliable access to mains electric power. I don't do aspirational by the way. Also be careful !

Well, appreciating that my desire for better propulsion far outweigh my bank balance, the local boat mechanic has come up with a possible repair. My crap Chinese engine suffers from random overheating (a common problem if the Internet is anything to go by). First trial today seems hopeful, bit of coolant spat out but no overheat. Second test tomorrow. On a plus note, saw a kingfisher.
