It was quite heavy - approximately 23,000 kg. The Lancaster weighed in at 16,740 kg. This flew with the RAF and kept the Ruskies on their toes From wiki Gross weight: 41,500 lb (18,824 kg) Max takeoff weight: 61,795 lb (28,030 kg) Up to 18,650 lb (8,480 kg) of weapons on nine external hardpoints, including general-purpose bombs, cluster bombs, TV- and laser-guided bombs, rocket pods, air-to-ground missiles, anti-ship missiles, gun pods, and nuclear weapons while it couldnβt carry a grand slam or tall boy it sure as shit would put the wind up you if it was headed your way fully armed! A massive shame the agreement to procure them included a scrap all airframes at the end of its service life, only a handful have escaped the scrap man π The F4 was a beast in its day. It largely superseded the F105 I pictured earlier. Still a few in service in some countries. However the F4 was also the aircraft that was the final nail in the coffin for the TSR-2 project, and with it the end of wholly-British aviation. ETA an error: the Harrier was the last hurrah in this respect.

I avoided mentioning TSR-2 Dad was beside himself with rage about that little episode of political shortsightedness, he never forgave Wilsonβs government for canning such an advanced aircraft - handing the market to the Yanks on a plate. They even had a go at hobbling the F4 with the ill advised Spey Engine requirement - marginal performance gains for shit loads of effort and expenditure just to keep RR in work. Oh well, what could have been

Oh well, what could have been Wilson was probably right in that we couldn't afford it though. And as an export it would have been about as successful as the English-Electric Lightning, which demonstrated that without foreign sales it just doesn't work. The greater irony was that the plan to buy the F1-11, an out-of-the-box and available in-service solution, was also abandoned as too expensive. Perhaps so; Britain had no business swanning around bombing Libya and the like anymore. We could leave that to the Yanks too. Incidentally the F1-11s that bombed Gadhafi flew from Upper Heyford; the only strike mission ever undertaken by the USAF from that airbase.
