Hi all, I"d appreciate the Collective's view on putting together a design for our next boat. Things I'd like: Semi-trad (I've had a cruiser and we like to be sociable but would prefer less open deck) Cocooned engine to reduce the effect on the beloved's sensitive ears. Reverse layout (had one and loved it) Galley > Pullman dinette > saloon Long(ish) well deck so her indoors can enjoy a good read with her feet up
So I am thinking this might fit in 56' if we sort out a decent bathroom and forward bedroom design.
I am not the world's greatest mechanic so care-free boating preferred (yeah, I know...) Ideally this boat will be a winter pied-a-tierre and summer holiday boat for two of us plus friends, so will need a hefty battery bank, inverter and probably a washing machine/tumbler.
So what have I missed? Grateful for any insight or experience shared.

From the "lady inside" point of view..... - under floor storage in the galley ... great for btls of wine, cans of beer or canned goods - instead of putting kick plates under you kitchen cupboards, have drawers installed on runners, recessed under the cupboards as the kick plate would be, another great storage solution - if your going to have a multi fuel stove have it on the port side of the boat ... your chimney stack & cap will spend a lot less time in the over growth and will always be in the centre when going through bridge 'oles & tunnels We only have 1 side hatch, I would love to have one on each side That's all I can think of at this time of night

Ive tried to attached a pdf of our layout on ellis (57 foot) in case it's any use to you. Attachments:

One of our boat's best features (to us) is the railings on top of the roof - handy for tying things to such as the octopus straps that hold our pushbikes in place on the roof, and perfect for puttings your fingers round whilst walking along the gunwhales. I have also noticed many boats have the controls - ignition key and switches - outside the cabin, exposed to the weather - I think this is just bizarre. Surely better to have them inside and protected?

Excellent - thanks. Innovative storage makes a lot of sense!

How about bathrooms? (Not wishing to start a "pump out" vs "cassette" debate). Walk-through or corridor? Any gotchas?

here's ours, it's a double shower, the oak cabinet is meant to be for a sound system, I use it for my towel storage - the sink is on the opposite wall from the loo

Consider a locker/seat on each side of the semi trad stern. Ours is like this and has the gas bottles under one side and the battery bank under the other, easy to get at Phil

I'll probably get mugged for this, but...
If your budget will allow, why not consider diesel electric? With a 20kW - 30kW generator in a silent enclosure, a good, big battery bank and some decent solar and you would be sitting pretty. With sufficient battery storage and solar production, you could probably even do a modest amount of silent all electric cruising during summer months.

Ours is like this and has the gas bottles under one side and the battery bank under the other, easy to get at Phil That's what we did - AND we made them 3 inches higher than the norm... enough height to be able to sit on and comfortably able to see over the cratch board (if we fit one)... it does make a huge difference to the driving position when seated though. Be careful not to make it TOO hight though - this reducing the back rest height or you MIGHT lose your mother-in-law over board!!!.... on second thoughts... ... .. :-)
