I'm getting ready to put a couple of rings of packing into the stern gland greaser.
What dictates the size of packing needed please ?

Yes measure gap between shaft and tube. Slightly bigger is ok because you can still squish the stuff down a bit. Slightly smaller, more likely to leak. I used the black stuff (impregnated with graphite) because it seems to last longer / needs adjusting less often.

If the square packing is not big enough for the gap, you can flatten it to make it rectangular so it fits. Might mean you need 3 rings instead of 2. How long is it since it was all replaced? Just replacing the odd rings can mean the packing nearest the bavk of the stern tube gets compressed and hard and can score the shaft.

In truth I can't remember because it was done for me whilst the boat was out for blacking.
I'm down to between quarter to half an inch of adjustment and considered adding a couple of links of packing ... which lead me to ponder how I buy the correct size, hence the question.
Thanks for the answers.

Shouldn't you pull out all the old packing before fitting new? It's ok just pump loads of grease in there first, it won't leak......much. Remember to put the joins at 12,4 and 8 o'clock to minimise leakage.
