So what does the grey anchor symbol next to a thread mean (viz the MtB thread)?

When i hover my cursor over the anchor it says 'this topic is falling' perhaps it means a once hot topic is now cooling down?

It means that I have enabled falling. This means that the topic is no longer bumped to the top of 'recently updated' when someone posts in it.

It is an interesting moderation technique.
Far less severe than actually locking a thread, but a good way to soft-close a thread.

I thought it was a 'printing error' and the anchor should have had a letter W above, or to the left of the symbol.

Very subtle. And effective.
