It's that time of year again, when some continuous cruisers seek a mooring for some of , if not all the winter.
Just wondered if anyone here (actual member or a friend/acquaintence) had plans to take a short term mooring?

Not for me, thanks I tend to travel further in the winter when the canals are quieter and I need to charge the batteries a bit more.

I spent one winter in a marina, one on the towpath.
Given a choice the marina from November to March wins for me.

My mate never takes a winter mooring but like metanoia prefers to keep moving. If there is a cold snap he usually makes sure he's moored near services until it clears. Rog

I think the arrangement I have works well, a permanent mooring on which I can park my car when I go off cruising in the Summer and which acts as a base in the Winter when I work. Even after I retire in three years' time when I could go CCing I will keep it on, I do like having a base and Brinklow is a rather agreeable village in which to be based. It's not expensive either, the rent and mooring permit together only work out at around £16 per week, and I doubt I could even park my car for £16 per week, let alone keep a boat there.

It's a bit bleak, but cheap and a pretty good spot.
I guess it being quite a busy route helps as you see passing boats.
My mate paid for a winter on the arm back in about 2006/2007 ... hated it.
Don't think he's had a winter mooring since.

Winter is best taken in the house IMO. It’s not the cool weather, it’s the lack of daylight and the lack of space to do the sorts of things one does when it isn’t daylight. Don’t fancy the idea of 16 hours of darkness a day with nothing much to do.

I had my first year in Brinklow Marina and I didn't really like that. The people I dealt with were nice and it was good having an electrical hook-up but all I could see out of the windows were other boats, plus there wasn't very much activity. Lots of the boats there never left the marina in the year I was there. Plus, even then (eight years ago) it cost over double what my farm mooring costs. There is a lot of activity with passing boats here which gives something to look at. I can also see the trains going by which I enjoy.
It helps enormously that I have transport, it is a bit of a trek to get anywhere.

Do you ever consider a marina or mooring metanoia ... in a cold snap etc. ? Rog The only time I've ever left my boat in a marina is exactly that - because I've had to leave it (e.g. when I had a week away to visit my poorly Dad). I have no electric heating/other power demands so there is no benefit for me to being anywhere other than on the towpath in a cold snap. In fact, sometimes when the weather is hard I can often find a "better", more sheltered spot. Of course, if it is REALLY cold and there is the danger of being iced in I make sure I moor reasonably close to services and amenities. If you live out here you don't really need to rely on the BBC's/a.n.other's weather forecasts - you feel what's coming... (eta - have no car so that is not an issue for me, personally)

This is 2 hours' drive from us - and, yes, I've driven the 7 kilometres to Hailuoto over the sea... we should have a go on the ferry next Feb, just for fun, and to hear the ice scraping down the sides. By the by, the Witch told me an hour ago that the price of firewood in Finland has gone up 100-150% ... so what we paid 450 Euros for this Spring (9 cubic metres = 6 when stacked) would now be at least 900 (?). I'm sure Ukraine appreciates our support.

Probably just profiteering by slimy Finns.

The Witch reminded me one of her sister's sons still has forest and has said we can get trees from him, in fact he phoned this Summer to say he had a load of felled trees for us to come over and get, but we are really full up at the moment, with our two wood 'cages' and the boathouse stuffed with logs. In Norway a woman at the desk of one of the hotels we stopped at said the cost of timber is the issue for her & husband building a sauna, it's just too expensive.
However, plenty of money about - Mo i Rana is having a new airport built so that jets can land there. Ready by 2025. They already have an airport, but the runway is only long enough for turbo-props / small jets.
When you see what kind of boats the harbours are packed with in Norway, you cannot help but feel we are 'having our noses pulled' with this 'Saving the Planet' and 'I support Ukraine' nonsense.
I see David Beckham's helping out at his local food bank this week. That's nice of him.

Yes metanoia we leave the boat when it's in a marina ... worth paying marina fees (cheaper than the excess on insurance policies) for peace of mind but we usually moor the boat and go. Same this week ... we'll stay outside the arm and only take the boat in when we're ready to go. Rog
