The actual post that started the 'definitive guide' thing was this one: No David. Quite the opposite dearest. I am compiling a lovley long response on the safety issues for you. You will just have to wait a while for it.

Can you provide a link to this please? It's a piece of Canal folklore I have been vaguely aware for years, but never tracked the actual thread down. Something about the Oxford? Please, please advise. Here you go... (and at the time her usernyouame was indeed Phyllis) www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=39688&page=2Classic example of two ego's going head to head over...nothing. Been there, done it and will probably do it again.

Well I met NC a couple of years ago, I was working on an old Humber barge in Thorne when she was passing. I recognised the boat and shouted her over. NC and her bloke, slammed reverse on, breasted up, boarded my boat armed with cold beers. Had a good natter and off they went. I suppose you should never judge a forum name by there cover. Just saying 🍺 Well apart from Tomsk, he's a full on bellend

The Other Side as I prefer to remember it. As a supplementary, could you or others reference the classic Chris Pink/Dave Mayall 'Lime Green Boat' reducto ad absurdum?

Possibly because of living in South Yorkshire ? Now then, I live in South Yorkshire. It may not be much but it's home. My house is a 15 min walk from Vic Waddington's yard at Swinton? I guess you know that yard. Did you know Vic at all? Just curious, because he was such an interesting but devisive character. Rog I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the place at all, but who would want to be known as South Yorkshire PHILIS, . . . with South Yorkshire abbreviated to SY, . . . as in S&SY Navigation ? Moving on to someone I would much rather be talking about, yes, I do remember Vic Waddington very well, . . . and with a great deal of affection and respect. When he died, at the age of 90 in 1999, much of any prospects for the continuance of waterborne transport at anything more than token level in this country died with him. He was very effective in forcing BWB to meet their 1968 Transport Act maintenance obligations on the commercial waterways after we lost the last truly pro-commercial BWB Chairman, Sir Frank Price, and became something of a 'bete noir' for his successors, and the above ground cemetery that passed for the managerial and administrative department of British Waterways, . . . even to the extent that several of the hypocritical gits from it attended his funeral just to make sure he really was dead, and that they were rid of him at at last ! He was certainly an interesting character, but divisive, . . no, not at all. Something not generally known about him is what a thoroughly decent, kind and generous man he was, and the extent of his anonymous contributions and work for charities, . . although I can think of one so-called charity he wouldn't be going out of his way to help, if he was still around !

we only have Phil's word for it, and he probably made an assumption.
Phil - what proof do you have?

Ah, got it. Sorry I'm a bit dim. SYPhylis. I met Vic Waddington several times in the early 80's. After an initial frosty start (he could be quite intimidating) I found him and his stories fascinating. Around the time many local people told me what a grumpy and mean old man he was. It hadn't been my experience but he did have a reputation. Just recently I got hold of a booklet by Mike Taylor "Victor Waddington - Giant of the South Yorkshire Waterways". Some terrific photos and fascinating information about the man and his charitable works too. It would be fascinating to hear his take on current waterway issues. Rog

If you are talking about Naughty-Cal's name then she posted previously on CWDF as Phylis and her real name is Rachel. I have had a pm conversation with her long ago on CWDF so can confirm that as fact. Roger

I have to say that this sort of "banter" brings this site into disrepute. By which I mean, nasty personal attacks on members of another forum. It is one thing to criticise the content of their posts, their actions as mods etc, but when it is just personal nastiness we come across like a bunch of spotty teenage bullies ganging up on the cripple in the playground. Time to grow up!
