Taken yesterday. One of the fun, 'secret' things to do in Turku. (just a quick snapshot, so no need to bang on about "lack of depth of field" or the horizon not being level) Föri is a ferry running across the River Aura in Turku, Finland. The ferry was completed in 1903, and it is the oldest vehicle still in daily operation in Finland. Föri is also the only municipally owned ferry in Finland. The name "Föri" is derived either from the Swedish word "färja", or from the English word "ferry".

That tower block is listing to Port. You're dead right (haha! geddit??!!).... because the Port of Turku is indeed to the left, down river.

I've taken the ferry from Harwich to Turku on at least a dozen occasions, three-and-a-half days. Boat was called M.V. Garden, a Class 1 icebreaker. We basically got paid for getting pissed for three days, but in the Summer we used to have barbeques on the open deck too. There was a sauna as well, I'm not sure where the boat was flagged but the crew was all Finnish. They used to give us guided tours of the bridge, engine room etc.

M.V. Garden was a freighter and could only carry 12 passengers. If there were more trucks booked than there was accommodation for I used to drive to Harwich, put the truck on the boat on Friday evening, then get a taxi back to Ramsgate. Then on Monday I used to get another taxi from Ramsgate to Gatwick Airport, fly to Turku (via Helsinki) then stay overnight in a hotel in Turku and meet the boat when it docked on Tuesday morning. This was all just to take freight to Moscow, there must have been mad money in it back then, I know I used to take home as much a month in the mid 1990s as I do in 2022.

I always hear the RoRos Adeline, Wilhelmine and several others on the London VTS radio coming in to or leaving Fords at Dagenham. Tug assistance this morning due to the winds. Radio is on 24 7 on Dulcinea. Nice background sound and also a good time stamp. Although this dump is surrounded by buildings the aerial setup on the boat is of such high quality that I can receive most comms on the tidal Thames including occasionally "Sunk VTS" which is right down near Southend somewhere. I like it. They do a half hourly river report which helps with knowing what the time is specially in the early morning.
