SAR continuing but I think this is RIP www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-64769602It seems sad people have to die when tugs get rolled. Another interesting case a while ago was the tug Flying Phantom. It turned out that the mate, who spent a lot of time on the boat including sleeping on board. climbed out of the wheelhouse immediately after pressing the winch release button and he survived. The other crew members drowned. I would have thought the basic training would tell you that IF an emergency release of the tow was instructed the first thing you do is get out of the wheelhouse. MAIB (Messing About In Boats) reports always a good read.

I can recall many occasions from my childhood when my mother sternly lectured me on the importance of immediately exiting the wheelhouse in the event of the tow emergency release button being activated. But in fairness I think she was recalling a former life as a Scottish tattooed sailor, which would explain the bouts of drunkenness and demanding to know where the nearest brothel was in a dodgy accent.

By contrast my dad was easier to live with so long as you didn't mind that he constantly gloated over his brilliant tactics at the battle of Austerlitz.

It must have been cool to have worthwhile parents. Mine were both pointless non entities. I'm pinning my hopes on the new generation.
They will be better than me. Hell of a job but someone has to do it!

Girting: when a tug is capsized by being pulled over by its tow line pulling the tug laterally.
Also I had an uncle who took up training frogs (part-time) as a second career when he retired.

No side exits from wheelhouse.

I find the term 'girted' interesting. I also suspect it is a Scottish colloquialism.

The yanks call it "tripped".
Never considered looking up the verb "to girt" I imagine something to do with the word "girth" will have a look.
I guess the relevance is that the vessel is rolled in a circular fashion. It isn't a normal type of sinking as the boat is hauled over sideways very quickly by the tow moving ahead of it.
That Flying Phantom incident was bad. The ship it was towing was doing 5 knots on its own engine. Crazy !!

I suspect it will be more closely associated with 'girdle'.

The Dutch carousel tug looks pretty wicked
The towing hook is on a slide which goes right round the wheelhouse.

Tow hook on the boat that went down a couple of days ago looks a bit awkward to drop. Looks like you have to pull a pin out and the disc rotates and drops the tow line. I wonder how that works. Tug is called the BITER.

Maybe it can be re-named 'Beater'.
