We have a Waeco Coolmatic CR-110. Have just checked for volt drop and it is 0.43v. The voltage (fridge off) is 12.9v and (switched on) 12.47v. It is 8 metres from fridge to batteries. The manual says, for this length, it should be 12mm2 . Does this sound right? I ask because it could be a problem getting that size cable through the boat.

You could probably get away with somewhat smaller but if you're going to the trouble of correcting it... Why not double up 6mm 2 if that's easier?

To be honest I'm not even sure what 12mm cable looks like so I may be fussing over nothing. Shall look at what it looks like and, if it looks too big, go for your double up option. We've had the fridge for well over 5yrs and, the only reason I've checked for volt drop is someone (Smiley Pete?) recently said that too much volt drop was bad for the batteries.

It's not really bad for the batteries, but it does waste power. The fridge will just take more current to make up for the voltage drop, that means more charge taken out of the batteries.

Well, it's only bad for the batteries inasmuch as you're wasting power. Any voltage drop is due to warming the cable up which is pure waste.

Add about 3mm for the insulation.
