I have recently had a chat with an owner of a wide beam who has just put his boat on the market for £119,000. I first encountered him several years ago when he had a 55 foot narrowboat which he lived on with his partner, this duly went on the market to buy a wide beam. He purchased I believe a Collingwood sail away lined with an engine and being a keen DIY man set about the boats completion while moored canal side before putting it on the market the year before last. He has since purchased another shell and did the exact same thing and at the time of writing this is on ebay awaiting a buyer.I spoke to him recently and he was telling me that if he buys a third shell then once that is sold it will give him a substantial down payment on a house for his expanding family. You have to admire his efforts and his plan,I don't know how widespread this practise is and obviously I don't know his margins, but here it is,a cottage industry alive and well on the canal

Clearly there is money in that canal. Its funny If I changed my widebeam it would be for a trad with vintage engine. But at the moment I prefer the space of a Joyce
