Why kelper describes calling God's worshippers to His House as pointless and selfish is beyond me. Perhaps it was a 'Devil-ish' comment. You keep misquoting me. Ringing the changes has nothing to do with calling the faithful to church! I said I liked the peals, which do serve that purpose.

Hear it ring, the bell. Come to church, or go to Hell! Ding dong, merrily on high, Fish and chips or Shepherd's Pie!

Yes I've heard of mummers at new year, chasing away evil spirits. Afaik some of these dances etc have traditional pagan roots, but that could have been invented, like the modern druids. There's also a tradition of Pace Egg plays at Easter about St George and the dragon. It seems I upset Paul with my comments, I was playing with our stereotypes about yanks, he referred to old history over there, when their history only goes back to the pilgrim father's, unless you look at the native dwellers who were ousted, from power, control and sadly, often, life. Also that everything in America is bigger better and that they pinch good ideas from us. This was compounded by him missing the irony, fullfilling another stereotype. Well, it seems we may have been at cross purposes. I dont know where you got the notion that i was a yank. I am in Ireland, thus the references to the wren boys and the straw boys.

So, to sum things up..
Everyone involved in this debate is a bellend.
On one side we have people getting offended on the behalf of others.. Nobody really knows why this tradition started. There is a chance that it came from imitating 'moors' (who are really more dark brown than black) and Victorians occasionally referred to this as 'nigger dancing' so there is a possibility that there is a racial element or origin. The people getting offended don't seem to be black or Moorish. The Morris dancers clearly are not doing this to cause offence or to mock black people.
On the other side we have people getting outraged about the outrage of others. A few dickheads had a go at a few other dickheads in birmingham.. this happens on a daily basis, it isn't big deal. Are people really so pissed off with 'PC culture' that they are prepared to side with Morris men? Has it come to this?
Why do Morris dancers wear bells?
So the blind can hate them too.

Oh come on Delta, are you telling me you don't like a good old outrage? It's fun! Anyway, I'm outraged by your unreasonable balanced view on the subject....

Apologies, my misunderstanding "across the pond"! And not knowing about wren and straw boys. I'll look that up.

The origins of blacking the faces have been lost over time....
blacking the faces is not an essential part of the dance....
the dance can continue blacked or not.
What problem?

But to choose something nobody can remember exactly why they do it, over just letting it go, seems a little argumentative for it's own sake.
Of course on 'home ground' as it were, where you know your audience and they know you.......
I wonder if this is another issue that's real purpose is just to rile people up. A feature of social media today I fear.

"Someone who is politically correct believes that language and actions that could be offensive to others, especially those relating to sex and race, should be avoided." - Cambridge Dictionary. It seems to be a right wing term used to insult lefties and liberals. What is the opposite of 'Politically Correct"? i1.wp.com/www.scriptonitedaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/003-Scott-Brown7.jpg"There is a mid-point between political correctness that is overbearing and bigotry that assumes as its moral justification that βI donβt have to be politically correct."
