Transit is front wheel drive as well handy in snow if we ever get any. The later 7 speed merc gearboxes are a bit of a pain in the arse but the earlier 5 speed ones are very good and found there way into other cars because of it

Transit is front wheel drive as well handy in snow if we ever get any. The later 7 speed merc gearboxes are a bit of a pain in the arse but the earlier 5 speed ones are very good and found there way into other cars because of it With Transits you'll have a huge choice of engines, lenghts and heights, and also front and/or rearwheel drive www.autoexpress.co.uk/ford/transit
Mercs aren't as good as they used to be, the 1.000.000 km were nothing exceptional in the past, and that without the regular and terribly expensive repair bills that most of the more recent versions require nowadays, and like many of the other makes electronic problems that are standard, and the source of endless missery.
I have an old 2001 Renault Master 2 L3H2 with a 2.5 non-turbo diesel engine that has only 80 Hp, which will make everybody laugh, but it's the most reliable engine without any electronics to go wrong, and I'm in no rush, as long as I get to my destination without braking down.
On the motorways that are poisonned with traffic jams everywhere, my 80 Hp is just as fast (slow) as another van with a 160 Hp engine.
I often look at the lettering on the bonnets of the modern big trucks, when I drove trucks in the late 60's early 70's they used to have engines between 100 and max. 200 Hp, now you rarely see anything with less than 400 Hp and many with 500 and even 600 Hp. it never seems to be enough.
Peter.

I have always used the Tranny as the benchmark, I've never known one go terminal save for complete seizure or rot.
Breaking News;
My brother has just contacted me with another car possibility cheap enough to buy for summer fun:
V reg 328i convertible with original hardtop 115000 miles
It belongs to one of his clients who has had it from new/almost new and has a raft of main dealer history.
Thoughts from the Brains Trust welcomed as well as putative valuations for a bit of fun.

The six pot motor is a peach and capable of double that no sweat if looked after - at that age and mileage check for water pump replacement, BMW fitted crap pumps with plastic impellers that do fail The vanos system can also be troublesome, plenty of info available on that though. Roof folding mechanism bork regularly and are expensive to fix. Rust around the wheel arches and boot floor are a problem now. Not my cup of tea, but, a decent example is a fair motor car to ride around in 17 years on. It's a small car with nowhere near the performance or practicality of the V70R you should be buying....

They are a nice if looked after and once upon a time would have been a future classic but I suspect the future will be short on petrol and diesel and long on electric so buy it and have fun, we do with our merc clk convertible. As for the van it would be a tranny for me over the sprinter Jason has one and at a 100k its had a gearbox [sellers warranty] but they arnt as good as people think

One of the bandleaders I used to do work for had a 3 litre V6 petrol Transit ........ now that was seriously quick. It was also a genuine "H" club member !!! For non early Transit drivers, to join the "H" club you had to get the speedo needle so far off the clock that it touched the "H" of the MPH printed at the bottom of the dial
