I remember driving down a lane one afternoon and a dog dashed out from a driveway, I couldnt stop in time and ran over the dog. Rushed up to it and it was obviously on its last legs struggling to breath. I couldnt just leave it there dying and with no reply to the house at the end of the drive, I took a shovel out of the boot and hit the dog over the head to put it quickly out of its misery. Imagine my surprise when a couple of days later, driving down the same lane I saw the same dog sitting at the end of the drive with a bandage round its head. We once went on holiday, from Ramsgate to the Lake District, some 350 miles away, and took our dog. On the first day, we let her off the lead at Windermere, and she ran away. We spent the rest of the day calling her, to no avail, we reported this to the Police and the local RSPCA, and spent the rest of the holiday frantically searching for her. Heartbroken, we returned to Ramsgate, and you'll never believe what was waiting for us on the doorstep when we arrived home... Fourteen bottles of milk.

I was talking to an older lady the other day about dogs getting lost. I mentioned that you can get gps trackers for the collar and she was very impressed. I like impressing people. These gps units do exist its not a joke but they do rely on gps and more importantly a mobile phone signal to work.
Some dogs are really clever so I reckon they could bypass this.

Oh and yes please do stick around. Hopefully I'll go quiet for the next few weeks - if not forgive me as I'll probably just be 'kicking back' about my best friends final struggle with the Big C (true story ).

I'll make sure I don't walk down the lanes in your vicinity.

Which smells worse, the pot noodles or the farts?

I went round to a mates house and was surprised to find he'd slept on the sofa.
He explained that he'd farted so much and the smell was so bad he'd had to abandon the bedroom at 4am.
"Surely it can't have been that bad?"
"It still is" (6 hours later).
And it was. Christ knows what he'd eaten.

Without wishing to upset anyone. The drugs vets use to euthanase pets do not always result in a peaceful end. Having been a pet owner for over 60 years , sadly I've had to take many various pets to the rainbow bridge, cats, dogs, rabbits, various birds etc etc. The massive dose of Barbiturates that the Vet administers only has one outcome......a very rapid comatose state followed by the heart stopping. I have stayed with all my pets and have never seen any signs of distress, and in fact I have never heard any animal suffering from any of my friends regarding their pets nor from any veterinary staff of my acquaintance. Phil That is my experience too, Phil. The last one was our beloved cocker spaniel, Sammy. I held her paw as the dose was administered and she just slipped into a deep sleep and then her heart stopped, all within a very, very short timeframe.

I stayed with my mums and dads dogs....they wouldn't so I did....I always thought they should never face that final curtain without someone they know. Mum and dad belonged to the era where you didn't acknowledge death. Most of mine RIP without having to go to the vets...

To be perfectly honest I don't like to acknowledge death either but my pets are very special members of our family and they deserve the best from beginning to end. My dream is always that pooch will come running across a field and just fall over and that will be the end. It has never been like that.....but we digress

Same here Patty I have held their paws and watched them slip away, and as always cried buckets for them, they are after all in most cases our best friend

OK. Rant alert, look away from this thread now if you don't like talking about death.
Back in 10 minutes with the rant.

Rant put on hold pending self moderation... No, go on, say your thing. Others might agree or disagree but only one person will get holier-than-thou and prissy and blether on about self-moderation, and none of us take any notice of him anyway. Just go for it.
