I hate oil filters. There's nothing like a well engineered boat and this is nothing...

Gawd !!! I feel for you !!! That will come off once and be replaced with a sensibly sited remote filter head. That white fuel filter isn't much better. I have engine room jealousy.

I'm not surprised ..... that is appalling. Whoever did that installation should be taken out and castigated with a blunt castigator !!!

To be slightly fairer it's 28 years old and there was better access before someone went wallet emptying crazy at the mastervolt shop and stuffed a generator, charger, inverter and two humongous batteries into an already cramped space. Still, sideways mounted cartridge oil filters... Just why?! Pet hate.

Every time I see something like this, it makes me happy I haven't got a narrowboat, even if crt do double the liscence for the privilege.

If ever there was a case for a bit of installation planning it must be a narrowboat with the engine marinised (ha bloody ha) and rammed inbetween the swims as far back as possible. And breath.

Some installations are much better than others I agree, but I've seen so many disorganised nightmares. If I was to ever buy a narrowboat, it would be the first thing I'd look at.

Well you know what they say, the first one is for finding out what you really want. All in all I'm happy, but space around the engine would be nice.

I love my boat in every way except the cramped engine. My wish would be an extra cabin grafted in for the engine, which I suppose would inevitably have to be interesting enough to warrent it's own cabin.

Next step external switch, I read your Square D recommendation elsewhere and looked on Midland Chandlers as suggested but without success, it was a 10 year old thread somewhere. I'll look harder if the hole drilling doesn't work. I fear the easiest way to get such switches now is Ebay but sometimes the descriptions are so poor one does not know if it is equipped for DC operation, still beggars and all that. Anyway it seems that you may have solved it, well done.
