So the are basically encouraging people yo dump contaminated oil in the bushes. How ridiculous. Difficult one. I can understand them not wanting to accept trade waste (and I think John's waste should probably be treated as trade), but not having easily accessible and reasonably priced places to dispose of waste is encouraging dumping (not helped by corporate dumping such as floating reed beds!). Anyway how is progress John?

Where I live (France) I only have to show a card that I received 5 minutes after I asked for this card, which entitles me to dump whatever I want in the different containers and drums they have.
A few weeks ago, I dumped 4 -20 liter jerrycans with waste oil, I couldn't leave the full jerrycans, but when they were empty I could trow them in a big plastic waste container.
I have no garden but many others were dumping car-trailer loads of garden waste when I was there, I think that they finally realised that only like this they could avoid (reduce) illegal dumping.
Peter.

Peter. I think this is what all councils should do....Swansea is fairly disgusting...we still have black bin bags and quite often they split...ive seen them discarded along the estuary...trouble is the Tip men have had their orders and so they have to question everyone. Ive cleared out loads my predecessors threw in a field..one of my neighbours 'compost heap' in the same field has glass bottles and plastic in..I just won't clear hers as now I just don't know what to do with the stuff with the Tip men being so strict.

Just spin a yarn, I took about 40x5l used oil and told them I was getting divorced, selling house after 20 years and clearing the garage out. It was trade really, the rest was true but unconnected. Talking to chaps at the tip and blaming whatever you're trying to dump on divorce gets sympathy and help every time I've found, there are seemingly a lot of divorced blokes working in these places and they know it's bad enough without some jobsworth at the tip making it harder.

So the are basically encouraging people yo dump contaminated oil in the bushes. How ridiculous. Anyway how is progress John? Got through cleaning the engine room and engine room bilge. Found the best thing was wiping down with neat road traffic film cleaner (stuff you buy for pressure washers) then polishing with a clean cloth. The paint on the chequer plate has taken a beating, it didn't like being soaked in diesel (can't remember what paint it was .... probably just something I had kicking round) I Recovered all the tools from the bilge and racked them up again, been round all the diesel pipes nipping them up (several weeping from being removed for the temporary fuel supply, Filled the stern greaser up with the last of my waterproof grease. Took a long walk to a decent chandler (the one here is pretty tiny) ..... about 3 miles ..... and it was hot !!! Got through 2 small bottles of water on the walk. The chandlery (at Fox's marina) is excellent and I got most of what I needed, including Marine 16 Bug Killer and tail shaft grease. ..... Fortunately there was a hostelry opposite and I was able to force a couple of pints of Hobgoblin down my neck so that I didn't become dehydrated while waiting for the bus back . They didn't have the filters for the Racor fuel filter, so they are on order from ASAP and should be here tomorrow. (My friend got the Daewoo filters for me and brought them up with him before I moved up to Ipswich. I haven't managed to get a date yet for when Dangerous is available but I have a plan "B" (and a plan "C" come to that !!!) so hopefully on the go again soon. I am putting off the decision regarding buying or building a fuel polishing system for the moment. The drums of diesel are stacked and roped down neatly on the deck ..... all 38 drums (a mixture of 20 and 25 litre) They are safe there and I will just fill up with fresh diesel and sort it out when I have the time to think it through properly.

You can tell I'm a ditch dweller as I'd swear Fox's marina is in Cambridgeshire.

When I first renovated house I used to explain how my predecessors had left everything in such a terrible mess and what they had put in compost heap foul...anyway 3 years ago tip men lovely and would assist me in disposing of gross stuff....however in the passage of years they have obviously had 'training' and attitudes to rubbish disposal have hardened ...Im glad the rubbish I got rid of then i haven't got to try and get rid of now.

Thanks for the update John - I wish you well.
To continue the off topic diversion - I'm now facing 3 weekly bin collections plus potential fines if you put your bin out early (don't go on holiday at bin collection time...), Green waste is now charged for (albeit a fairly small charge).

Going back to the whole diesel/water mix situation and disposal thereof.
I don't know much about it but there are some pretty anoraky types about who use reclaimed oils of various sorts for heating and power generation. I wonder if they might be interested in it?
I've got a feeling the water might actually mix with the diesel so maybe its not feasible. Not sure.

Well hope they don't start that shenanigans here..my garden refuse is out 10 days early...him over the road put his out before I did....

I've got a feeling the water might actually mix with the diesel so maybe its not feasible. Not sure. Even fresh diesel from the refinery usually has a percentage of water present. Larger amounts often settle out with the diesel floating on top but it is possible to filter out water (even tiny amounts)
