These laws being the product of 'intelligent' people? As I said thick as pig shit. Well, there are laws and customs which we have in the UK which Americans consider bizarre, such as the fact that dozens of people are sent to prison every year for watching television without a licence. It's bizarre to me that women regularly receive the death penalty in Islamic countries for the crime of having been raped. It would be wrong to single out the US as the only country in the world with laws which defy rational analysis.

Indeed I wasn't singling them out though, but the discussion was about the states after all. Lawmakers sometimes defy logic, agreed.

No one mentioned excusing.
I just believe it is better to try and comprehend why things there are different, rather than simply saying they are "thick as pig shit".
There are movements pressing for reform and change, but with little success as yet.
Remember, it's not that many generations back that we 'enjoyed' public executions, bear baiting, dog fighting etc etc. I don't think we can be too supercilious.

You are correct to some degree. What actually happens is that the person is fined and then fails to pay the fine (used to be about £2.00 a week for those in need) for whatever reason. I always viewed it as a modern way of getting around the term "Debtor's Prison" as in the vast majority of cases there wasn't any difference once you looked at the reality.

Rog The difference of course being that we developed, eg we no longer execute people, but parts of the states still do. We clamped down on the use of certain weapons after key incidents in this country. Elements of the gun lobby in the US, actually seem to cry more stridently for retaining the right to bear arms despite it being blindingly obvious that it's at the root of these mass shootings. That is why I describe them as 'thick as pig shit', simply because I truly believe they are.

Remember, it's not that many generations back that we 'enjoyed' public executions Indeed, in fact for around five years in London it was possible to travel on an underground train to watch a public execution.

We, as a nation and society, have been developing and evolving for quite a lot of years in comparison to their 200 plus years.
Perhaps progress away from the gun will be possible, given time.

Rog so you are suggesting that the original American colonists were ignorant monkeys, rather than adventurous Englishmen? stop making excuses for idiotic tolerance of such behaviour. ............... and I suggest that your view of American history may be coloured by watching too many westerns - the gunfight at the OK Corral was an exception, not a typical occurrence.

Well, as I have said before, the death penalty isn't really a punishment. Look at the case of Ian Brady. Had he had his way he would have been hanged in 1966. He campaigned for many years to be allowed to die, and this request was repeatedly refused. It is far more of a punishment to lock a person up in a cell smaller than a car parking space and allow them to suffocate with boredom and hopelessness for fifty years.

Rog Or rather 1 a perfectly reasonable question. 2 a good summary of your stance on the existence of the prevailing US gun culture. 3 a suggestion you need to bone up on the history of the US.

We clearly have very different views.
I am unwilling to dismiss an entire nation as being 'thick as pig shit' and have attempted to explain why.
I decline to return insults.

Rog I think you misunderstand. I haven't dismissed an an entire nation as anything. I have friends in the US who are disgusted by how the NRA and their supporters conduct themselves, they are not alone by a long chalk but the lobby is very strong and influential.

Martin Amis tonight summed up much of what's going on in the US, 'A conspiracy of Dunces'.
Spot on I would say.
