No one use an Alde gas upright boiler nowadays? Be interesting to know what these cost to run. Just ripped one out of the boat i fitted the Webasto to a few months ago, must of been 25 years old and was constantly playing up / unreliable.

I have one, they are ok in autumn and spring, and great for heating water, can heat the tank in 15 minutes, but in deep winter i struggled, plus i was using a 13.5kg bottle every 5 days.

Last winter was a hard one for me, i was out of work for a couple of months so had to ration the fuel, luckily i came across a lot of logs, filled the roof!
Will never be like that again.

Ex hire boats in the winter suck, not enough insulation so the poor little morso gets battered, and so does my coal and stash of logs. Soon be Spring! I can understand that, I was inspecting a partly stripped out ex hire boat a few weeks back and I was appalled at the dreadful insulation (ha!) and the total lack of any kind of vapour barrier. I don't think they can all be as bad as this one was. There was a miserable layer of rockwool against the cabin sides between the 18x18mm(?) box used as frames. Held in place by the panelling (chipboard) which was pop riveted to the frames. The whole lot covered over with an ultra thin ply made to look like tongue and groove. There were large black stains down the panelling at every frame. I felt very sorry for the people who had bought it who were just finding out how awful it was.

Going back to heating costs Just noticed that Coals2U are doing the delightful lovely wondrous godlike 10kg bags of Brazier for £4 each (£10 for 25kg) including free delivery if you spend over £50. So I ordered 50 bags. I usually get 15 at a time from Wickes using the car (same price) but delivered is more convenient (residential mooring). I would buy from the coal boat but I can't deal with 25kg bags as I'm not man enough. Give me 20 Grand Union locks in a day I'll do that by myself no problem but 25kg coal bags NO THANKS. Just for info

Also a multi fuel stove obviously. The alde is mainly for hot water if engine has not been run. I believe full time heating with an alde is rather expensive if using 13kg bottles.

Same fit out team I think. on the plus side there's loads of room.

My boat has diesel fuel ce,tral heating, which is rather nice for someone like me with a very bad back.
The only thing that isn't nice is that the price of this liquid is going up by the day.
They delivered 500ltr of fuel to my boat yesterday for € 387,94 (+/-£350) which is already more than half my retirement pension.
If one day I can sell my boats, and find (or build) another one, I'm thinking about a stove that will use pellets.
The bags with pellets are often about 10 kgs, a weight that I can handle, and don't give the amount of dust that wood- and coal makes.
To be as independent as possible it will have to be one that doesn't need electricity, and possibly with a waste oil burner too.
Peter.

Pete, were going up to the boat tomorrow and unwanted to try the stove. Whatever best way to get it going? Bubble diesel one. Any tips. Adrian

I drip about a digestive biscuit sized puddle of diesel on full flow into burner pan then light a sugar cubed sized firelighter in the middle & replace the burner meshes over it and shut door, after about 30 secs I turn mine down to half/third flow, works fine most times!! Make sure you have a good diesel flow...ie a full tank etc as they are syphon flow, not pumped so easily run dry...Fitting my aux tank has transformed my Bubble heating system!!
Other way is, same digestive sized puddle, replace the meshes and chuck in a couple of caps of meths then chuck in a little bit of lighted paper, watch out for the woosh/bang!! not as successful as the firelighter method with the Bubble but the meths worked every time when I had my Kabola boiler on my widebeam.

There are firelighters. Did not just want to guess. Ours has a separate tank too. No idea how much is in there, might see if I can dip it. Might even be worth filling it up anyway.

My bubble in the bedroom is an easy lighter, I turn it on full for about 10 seconds then use one of those long gas lighters to light the diesel by the turney thing in the pot, it always catches straight away then put the top basket back on close door and turn it down to no 3. Never fails and this is my second boat with a bubble stove awesome beasties
