I think they are taking quite a big risk behaving like that. If something goes wrong with their boat why would you help? You probably will but you would have every right to watch it sink.
If I had my family on a boat in that sort of area where there is a flood risk I would make sure to go out of my way to keep the neighbours happy. You never know when you might need them.
Oh well. you do get 'em as they say.
Just part of life. Its particularly annoying for helpful boaters because you get a "one way street" situation. I know a bloke who's been on boats since the 70s and he has on one occasion stood by and allowed someones boat to sink when he could have prevented it. because that someone was an arsehole. He is normally very helpful and knows what to do but why bother if there is nothing in return ?

Although I hate them now (to use your favorit word ) if there's a situation where their lives would be in danger, I would of course try help them anyway. But I don't lend them anymore tools, or tow their car if it won't start and other little things like that, I've had more then enough of the one way services. Peter.

I am sorry to hear that your situation is such Peter. I have been very lucky with my neighbours, wherever I have been moored. stay safe !!! Myself I've always been fortunate too with the neighbours I've had in the past, everywhere I've been. This really is the first time something like this has happened. In the past when I had my official mooring for my passenger boat, I had electricity and water installed, and all the barges that were moored close to me were always welcome to plug in and also use my water, for me that has always been normal, if you have enough of something and you can help others with it, then it's nice to share. Apart from all that, I will do the best I can to stay safe. Peter.

There are naff neighbours and good neighbours...around me its sort of shared out..I try to get on with everyone and I will not take sides in silly arguments....Most here hate the farmer who 'accidentally' shot someones sheep and it ended up with the police and apparently dealt with as fire arms offence..before I arrived here but folks have long memories......I've visited him several times and he's a tad eccentric but I don't think dangerous.
Ref your adventures with the floods..why don't u set up a blog..its easy...has to be cos I can manage to..in fact Ive completed 4 and a couple of half ones..then it means theres an online story for all to read. My lot have never read any of mine but I like waffling so I carry on regardless.

My lot have never read any of mine but I like waffling so I carry on regardless. As you're saying very rightly, there are naff-and good neighbours, I've always had good ones in the past, and that's probably why I don't understand why these naff one are like that, as there's no need to be like that. To start with they were not too bad, and I could live with them without too much difficulty, but later I had the impression that they were only (sort of) nice because I had tools and other things that they liked to use without having to buy anything themselfs, and their car regulary needed to be towed. In the meantime they've had an inheritance that gave them enough money to buy a much better car that didn't need towing anymore, so less need to be more or less friendly to their neighbour, it's a weird way of thinking, but I don't think that they're used to thinking. Setting up a blog may be an easy thing to do but I have already to many other (easy) things to do that I don't do. Maybe when I'm 80, and there's still some memory left, I will try to write a book of at least 1 page, and hope that that will become a best seller I will most definitely buy one copy of my own book myself, so there will at least one sold, as that's how all best sellers start, selling the first one may get the ball to roll. Peter.

The latest news from my part of France, the river came up another 4" overnight, but has gone down 2" since then, so I was starting to feel better on one side, and more worried on the other, as if it really go's down I will end up firmly stuck on this huge tree, with my gangway sky high (or maybe a couple of inches lower than the sky). Checking telphone numbers of this town, I found an emergency number that I called about 2 hours ago and explaned them the situation here, and asked if they could organise something, someone, the fire-brigade, the army or Donald Trump to help me getting rid of this bloody tree before it's too late. They wrote my name and number down, and that's all for the time being. I managed to get off the boat and had a look at what the town-workers were doing in the street where my cars are parked (which has water over the road too) as they were putting concrete blocks in front of the houses with planks, to make walkways to higher parts of the street. When I asked them why they were doing that while the levels are going down now, they said that because of the almost permanent rain of the last few days, there was a new rise predicted, not good if that's the case. They were friendly enough to come to my boat and supply me with an extra concrete block to stop the planks they laid a few days ago from floating, and a signalising cone to replace my yellow marker box of the other day. Peter.

A terrible time for you.
But most important of all, don't take risks and stay safe.
We're thinking of you.

I just dumped a bottle overboard with a message, now on it's way to Paris not likely to be as quick as the train, as the direct train from here to Paris takes only 57mins. But it will get there after having gone over 7 weirs (but 8 locks) on the Yonne and 8 weirs on the Seine. Maybe one of my friends there will see the bottle and pick, it up Peter.
