The text does say "twin density" so it may have a heavy layer in it and with or without it will attenuate the sound to soem degree but as the vendor gives no attenuation figures who knows - it is Ebay.

The brand is "car insulation UK". Maybe aimed more at already quiet engines to make them even quieter ?
I just wonder what effect this could have in an installation like Kris has. Big generator in a fairly big steel engine room. Where do you fix the material? To the inside of the hull? I have a big generator in a smaller engine bay - unlined steel and it is pretty quiet but could do with being quieter. And how would you glue the stuff to the sides.
Or are you thinking of making up some sort of box around the generator and putting the soundproofing in there ?

It's in a corner, so I'd put on the sides behind it and on the underneath of the deck above it. It's self adhesive. But I've decided that stuff isn't worth buying really. As you say it's for making quiet engines quieter. So I'll keep looking for something suitable.

Can you keep this thread going please as it's interesting I was passing a boat near Wembley a while ago and there was a pile of what looked like the proper soundproofing sheets on the roof. Its about an inch thick and 2'x2' sheets but I couldn't see if it had the lead bit in it. I might stop opposite next time I pass and see if they want to get rid as its been on their roof a few years. I'm not convinced that soundproofing a big generator unless done very £££well will be that effective. Interested to hear the results if you do find something suitable

If you can mount it in a box with the box on flexible mounts that would a good start, then you would only have a box to sound proof. Just stopping it resonating the hull will be a lot quieter. Having said that I had a MV genny in my last boat that was effing noisy despite being done like that. The one thing that was recommended in the manual but not done was to mount it on 20mm steel plate. 20mm! Bejesus that would have been a heavy chunk of steel!

Yea I'll keep looking, but I don't won't to spend loads on it. By the way it's not a big generator, 900 or so cc.

The noise through vibration isn't that bad. The noise echos around the engine room, so it's stopping that noise Id be intetested in.

if you were thinking of enclosing the generator in a ply housing with decent baffles for the cooling air then it would probably make quite a big difference with any kind of sound absorbing liner if the ply is good quality and thick. This would act like the dense layer and help with the lower frequencies.
The best does seem to be the type with he lead centre layer but there are some cheaper types that seem to have a thick solid plastic centre deadening layer ....... I don't have much experience but I did use some of the lead centre material to fill in damaged sections around Shapfell's engine housing (which used the cheaper stuff) It helped but not a lot ...... a future job is to do it properly with the lead cored stuff

I wonder about cutting to size the lead stuff.

It cuts easy enough with big scissors (I have a big old pair of dressmakers scissors and they handled it fine) I then just used foil tape to seam it and to seal cut edges
should add the stuff I used was 1"
