Ah the good old days when canals were properly maintained, before those incompetent scurrilous sharks at BW and then CRT got their noses into the trough. I mean, look at this lovely picture of how Gas St Basin used to look in the 1960s. You can almost picture the roses round the door... Gas Street Basin - the view from Broad Street Tunnel (1968)

So it was already not being maintained by BW. I recall, just, being aged 12 or so, firtling around Rochdale Canal basin arm, since filled in and retail units planted. Came across a room in a mill off the towpath chocca with old butchers bikes. I wish my tin cans and string had had the capacity to take pics.

Can't blame BW for that though, it was still Rochdale Canal Co. Came across a room in a mill off the towpath chocca with old butchers bikes. I wish my tin cans and string had had the capacity to take pics.

Weren't the 1960s generally considered to be the period when canals were in greatest decline, before leisure boating had taken off?

The photo was 1968, same year as the waterways were split up into cruising, commercial and remainder. The point is that those old codgers on here always harping on about how good it was in the old days, and how terrible it is now, are delusional. 1968 was the first year I visited the BCN on a centre cockpit cruiser called Swanora. That could almost be me and my mate going through the stop lock, aged 12. But don’t think so, I was 6’ and he was normal size!

I suspect you have hit the nail on the head, such is the drive for authentic history, Cart are just letting it look like it did in the past, by doing nothing.

I didn’t reproduce it, I linked to it. i see no linky? Perhaps you should visit that well known high street optician? Anyway, if you can see the photo, it is because you are connected to the site hosting the photo. It is their photo, on their server, publicly available to view. Perhaps not to copy, but then I haven’t taken a copy.

Just checking, wouldn't want you to suffer the wrath of the copyright owner, the friend of Sculptor wasn't happy about images being used without permission, would have been awful for you to get your knuckles wrapped too.

You are so good to me! xxx Anyway, to give your point due consideration, it is probably courteous to include the source in the link. I’ll have a go at editing it...
