Iβve got my Boat masters, power boat level 2, inland waterways helmsman instructor, doesnβt sound like they are worth the paper they are written on, might as well return the lot π

Iβve got my Boat masters, power boat level 2, inland waterways helmsman instructor, doesnβt sound like they are worth the paper they are written on, might as well return the lot π It's an odd one ..... I have met highly qualified people who were as much use as a chocolate teapot. I have also met highly qualified people who were excellent. I have met some totally unqualified people who were also excellent. The finest seaman I ever met was totally incapable of passing an examination. He served 4 years sea time as an apprentice but never managed to pass his second mates ticket, he served on various ships as Bosun, quartermaster and Lampy and even a spell as chief steering quartermaster on the Queen Mary. When I met him first, he was serving as an uncertificated third mate with an exemption (for all but the higher ranks exemptions were granted for people who could not pass written examinations more commonly for engineers than deck, they were required to be verbally examined.) I was fortunate to sail on three trips with Dave, on one we were in trouble off North Cape in a severe winter gale, when one of our anchors ran out on its own after snapping the devils claw. The skipper had the good sense to put Dave on the wheel and take his orders at the telegraph. (He also rated him as the finest seaman he had ever sailed with) I frequently despair at the modern attitude that everyone with a bit of paper is an expert and that anyone without is no good. It is that attitude by top management that is one of the problems with CRT and EA they often ignore the advice (and value) of people who have been living and working on the waterways for a lifetime, in favour of the pronouncements of someone with a degree in management .... but no practical experience of the waterways.

^ AKA arse covering. Something goes wrong. "I put him in charge, he was abundantly qualified". "I put him in charge, totally unqualified but he's very good you know". Which one has their job and pension safe.
As someone who made his way through life doing stuff with zero appropriate qualifications but being feckin good at it, I'm in agreement that experience can't be gained from swotting but you can see how it is. It's part of the blame culture times we live in and it's going to get worse.
