We are visiting Liverpool in July and afterwards, we have time to traverse the Pennines both ways on the way home. I though we would just come out of Liverpool and do the entire L&L but the question is, which way to get back, Rochdale or Huddersfield Narrow? People say we should do Standedge but I don’t have a great desire to be in a tunnel for 2 hrs, so that is not a determining factor.

Maybe we just like different kinds of tunnels eh? ;-)

Standedge is 1h40m each way. Not at all scary. CRT chaperone with you, and another CRT man pops out at intervals from the disused railway tunnel, switches all the lights on, and asks how you are. Then he turns off the lights, makes ghost and owl noises, and shouts after you "You are Doomed!!"

The Rochdale is very nice to Todmorden, but then you have the Horror of eastern Manchester to face. The Huddersfield Narrow is a delight. 42 locks up to the tunnel from Huddersfield, 32 down to Portland Basin. The Macclesfield is nice, but will Marple Locks be buggered up yet again?
I'd give Liverpool a miss, and just do the Pennines. Why ruin a holiday?

The Rochdale of course, wide, roomy and beautiful. No tunnels full of the biggest spiders you have ever seen. No fierce rivet banging rocks. You can always just nip up to Sla'wi't and walk to the tunnel, have coffee and cake then go on the trip boat. (I'd call it an electric tug but that might be a different bit of machinery altogether). Then back to Cooper Bridge and over the top.

The Rochdale is very nice to Todmorden, but then you have the Horror of eastern Manchester to face. Yep, I would have absolutely no objection whatsoever to Adolf Hitler returning from the dead and gassing everybody under 25 years old from Miles Platting, Newton Heath and Failsworth. Absolutely horrible canal, CRT should fill it in and sell it so Aldi, McDonalds and Kwik-Fit can build on it. HNC by contrast is a delight.

What about the Manchester end of that nearing Portland Basin, is that not too bad?

Either route will take you to anal treet, at least that's what it said last time I went through.

What about the Manchester end of that nearing Portland Basin, is that not too bad? Not bad at all with the HNC - which actually ends just east of Portland Basin - the waterway becoming the Ashton. Portland Basin to Manchester has been described as a nightmare by some, by others as nothing-undue-occurred. There's a video of it on Youtube, hang on.... ...here it is: the bridge at the end is the beginning of the Lower Peak Forest Canal.

We have done the lower peak forest and Ashton, the latter wasn’t a big deal except for the annoying handcuff keys and lack of ability to cross at top and bottom gates. Ditto the Rochdale 9, no big deal.
