Not from a canal boat but I did hear of a case where a second hand engine for a tug was unloaded on the quayside in the evening and by the next morning had been stolen ...... and that weighed in at several tons !!!

Im just amazed it was taken with no one seeing it happening, they operate from outside Ringabells Pub where there are approx 10 permanent moorers / liveaboards!!

The sheer brazen gall of some people often amazes me .......
neither could have been done quietly.
With the trip boat the engine/gearbox was presumably fairly heavy so they must have used something to move the unit.
Unless of course it was just lifted straight onto another boat and poled away. ........ that would have been fairly quiet

There was mention of a collision damage waiver for hirers, isn't that to pay for any damage to the hire boat, anything else will be covered by the third party bit?

I've been hit by a hire boat whilst on the boat, the hire company still didn't give a fig. And I don't give a fig about going round to their head office with our full Elsan ready to tip onto their desks and suits. They really don't like it when you appear in person. I don't know if it would make any difference to this particular hirer company well known on the Leeds and Liverpool for their boats doing damage.

Never heard of anything like this happening before to any boat! I know someone who had an engine and gearbox stolen from the boat (it was a new beta 35 in a trad sailaway nb). He was moored by a quiet road known for pikey problems fly tipping etc. Someone must have done a few recce trips and figured out it was worth nicking. The bloke is a talkative type so he may even have told a "random passer by" about the engine he had etc. The road is regularly used by commercial vehicles as there is a small industrial estate so nobody would have thought a hiab truck unusual.

What does it say in your insurance, is it like car where you have to report it to yours and let them deal with it? Thinking some more - Almost certainty because if you fail to get adequate money from their insurance then you may choose to claim on your own - assuming you have some. Your insurance co will be very miffed if they think you messed up the claim against the others. So probably I should have said talk to your insurer first.

I suspect without witnesses there is nothing you can do.. If the hire boat suffered damage in the collision the hirers would lose their deposit..in that case it a win win for the hire company...its a shame no-one saw or got the name of the boat.. How much damage was done?...any 'paint' from their boat on yours?... No, sadly. Blacking on blacking, I'm thinking!

Lie like a cheap chinese watch, say you were on the boat but knocked unconscious in the collision! Mrs Loafer will provide the bump. Mrs loafer will say she saw the boat but was to busy treating you to give chase!!! Will that do your honor? Ha ha! Like it! I'm sure Mrs Loafer would be happy to provide the alleged damage to person. The damned shower room still isn't done!
