Never mind all the motoring advert bollocks I was wondering if it would actually be worth having a "watermen" emergency service on standby to deal with all things water related. Ideal job for a boater.
CRT and EA could be eliminated and any problems dealt with on a callout basis.
Yesterday I passed an exercise on the Thames it was some sort of flood preparation thing at molesey and it was mostly firemen there.
It seems wrong.

I was being serious. RCR is a waste of space. I will have to have a word in the shell like ears of my parliament friends.

The fire brigade were great when we were desperately pumping to stop an ex pilot boat from sinking alongside. ....they managed to hold the flooding down to a level that did not cause too much damage until the tide turned. Without them we would have had to abandon the engine room and seal it off with lots of damage to the engines/generators/switchgear etc. (delivery job from Manchester Ship Canal to the Thames) another "interesting sea going adventure"

I will always remember my jon o groats to lands end cycle ride in 2012. we camped each night and once we hit England the rain started and as we approached Lancaster the fire brigade were flypast with ribs.
and we were meant to be camping. found a pub that night and stayed in a room for 15 quid. beat decision we ever made

I was suggesting replacing ALL functions of navigation authorities with a 4th emergency service. Not trying to demean the fire brigade at all.
Seriously.

Could we not gather together all Foxy's 'strongly worded' letters of complaint plus printouts of all his offensive / deleted posts, scrunch them up into balls and use those to block up any major canal breaches?

One has to speak as you find.
RCR have been great for us, from delivering an alternator belt when foolishly I didn't have a spare and was nowhere near anywhere to get one, to replacing a gear box, drive plate and drive coupling following major failures.
Like any insurance, it's expensive if you never need it.
Been a member for 14 years and will continue with them. In my view it's good to have options when there are problems.

Who pays for RCR here?
Any man that calls out another man to fix a boat engine needs to have a word, its not a modern car engine with fancy electronics, google and a few tools fixes everything.

But some people simply don't want to. If you pay to have everything else in your life fixed and maintained, have no tools and you're happy to pay, why would you want to work on an inaccessable smelly narrowboat engine?
Not me BTW, I'm tooled up and don't trust anyone else to fiddle with me bits anyway.

If I never when boating, I'd probably not join RCR.
As I do for 9 months each year, it's good to have someone to call, even if only to deliver parts to me, wherever I may be.
