I was boating through London yesterday and saw a seagull pecking a coot. The coot was alive but definitely in deep shit.
I've not seen this before.
Anyone else seen it or anything similar?

Well... also London..I saw 2 drakes on top of one poor duck attempting a threesome I guess..the poor duck was submerged and struggling..local passers by were shocked particularly as her duckings from first hatch were in a right panic. She eventually broke free..

I've seen that quite often. They do sometimes drown the female which seems a bit counterproductive from an evolution point of view !
I've seen seagulls eating dead coots but this was the first time i've seen it happen while the bird is alive.
As for passers by I always find it quite amusing when people are shocked by nature.
I imagine the seagulls must be rather shocked by mankind's fishing habits as well.

There’s a moorhen nest in the reeds by my daughter, had 9 chicks last week but alas Saturday morning was like a scene from a slasher movie.. 5 of the chicks butchered and their corpses just floating there☹️ Dunno if it was a cat, a weasel or what?
Good thing tho... mum,dad & other 4 going strong👍

I have seen 2 male swans fighting and the bigger swan was holding the smaller swans head under the water, luckily for the smaller swam it pulled free but the bigger one went after it. Fascinating but not pleasant to watch.

Good thing tho... mum,dad & other 4 going strong👍 I wonder if it was one of the parents. Its not impossible that nature could cause them to deliberately eradicate some of their own offspring in order that the others survive. If it was another creature it would seem likely they did if for food or it could have been another water fowl of bird. Coots are very aggressive and they are birds. Coots are not water fowl. Look at the feet.

We have a stainless steel box over the shitpump on the pontoon. I have seen a coot aggressively attacking its own reflection .
Same with swans. Nasty buggers.

Same with swans. Nasty buggers. Apparently a whack from their wing can break your arm! I think it’s an old wives tale myself!

Taken in my garden, I walked ever so slowly through the garden, snapping pics all the way, I was 2m away with this shot. The Sparrowhawk was engrossed with eating the starling.
