Quick moan.
I came down through Hanwell flight and the two locks below before brentford yesterday.
Some pillock had been using a cordless grinder to remove paint from the steel balance beams on Clit Heroes lock. So there was dust everywhere which got all over my trousers (am I bovvered) but also more seriously made the ground very slippery so was hazardous. Why the hell not just paint over it ?
On another note I was talking to a gentleman the other day who explained to me the reason why advice is issued to ask people to close lock gates after use.
It's because it covers up maintenance problems. If you leave gates open and a pound dries out at some point something will get fixed. If all gates are closed it's much less obvious that the whole thing is fucked.
I found this quite a convincing argument however I do still close up behind me on hanwell flight because leaving everything open would cause negative experiences for other boaters if they find excessively low pounds.
It's a bit of a catch 22 situation.

15 minutes with mop and the dust is gone - a good deed for the day too. Shame the Muppet that made the mess didn't have the sense to clear their mess up though

At some point you have to remove the 1000 layers of paint to make a proper job but as Gazza says shame they didnt clean up afterwards

I don't have any nice trousers. All from charity shops because I get them dirty too quickly. The kind of dirt I get into them (oil, canal mud etc) does not wash out therefore it is pointless for me to buy decent trousers.
It's not about my trousers. Its the principle. Its not like painting a boat. You can just go over the old paint. It's only black with white bits for visibility. Nothing particularly important really. I think it is a good indicator of a general malaise. Someone can make the effort to strip the paint of a balance beam (and not repaint it) but all the actual functional parts of the locks are getting more and more knackered.
I suppose 99℅ of people walking past a lock just see the cosmetic bit not the actual purpose.

Exactly. Everyone leave gates open and any faults will be exposed. If the canal become unusable for people who go out boating for enjoyment then -in theory- things will get sorted out.
It's a bit of a technical problem when you get a lot of people on boats for whom moving the boat is actually a chore and something they would rather avoid.
So what is to be done?

Rog That assumes people can tell the difference between leakage and a bit of water going past the gates. I've had someone telling me a lock is leaking badly when in reality it would take ten minutes to fill a beer keg. Its when it takes 10 seconds that it is more worrying but not everyone can see the difference. So if everyone left exit gates open it would become obvious.

I used to buy all my jeans from charity shops cos of all the hard messy work here...but I then decided Im gonna have a few really smart pairs cos I got fed up with looking scruffy....however Horror House has not respected my new gear and really until we part company I should just buy from charity shops....To-day I've had to disguise the consequences of another 200 year old tantrum by whatever entity resides within....It's took all day and I'm shattered...I think this house hates me...
