As usual with these things, there can be fault on both side. Yes some people go too fast past moored boats (though we don’t see it often) and yes some boats are tied up exceptionally and ridiculous badly. We see that more.
When I go out for a walk, I tend to walk briskly. Not because I’m am in a hurry, just because I find shambling along like an old person, rather tedious. I suppose it’s a bit the same with boating, I see no virtue in going slowly for the sake of it (except when passing moored boats, of course). Our boat has a “right speed” at which it makes reasonable progress without washing the banks etc. Other boats go optimally at different speeds. What I hate is people who think that THEY go at the right speed and anyone who goes either a bit faster or a bit slower is a selfish moron. Speed fascism, I call it. If people want to go at a different speed to us I either let them pass ASAP or hope they will do likewise.

It's not the speed they are traveling I was pointing out, but that they make a nod to slowing down obviously thinking they should. But their actions slowing down drastically at the last min, then speeding up as soon as they are past. Makes the consequences worse.

Well judging by the number of people who thank us for slowing down when we go past, I’m guessing it’s the right thing to do. As opppsed to the times I’ve been told off for not slowing down. Personally I think people should learn to moor up properly...oops sorry...wrong forum..

I call it car driver mentality and you see another aspect of it with horn warnings. Instead of a simple long blast... (goes on for several pages) I enjoyed sounding our front horn with a long blast at the beginning of Foulridge Tunnel, and several times inside. The sound as it rattled down the walls into infinity was impressive. I was waiting to hear the splosh of bricks coming loose. Blasting Stairway to heaven at number 11 on the volume scale through Blisworth Tunnel at 23:00 is pretty good too 🔊🔊🎸🎸🍻🚢🔨

No i got your point, there just didn’t seem to be any need to comment on it as it is inarguable. I was commenting on the wider issue.

Well in the sense that slowing the engine as you come abeam the moored boat is pointless and maybe even counterproductive. Whether that is a common occurance where you are I can’t say. It’s not something I’ve particularly noticed round our way.

....and then we get the grumpy old curmudgeon pootling along, insisting everyone travels at his pace, cos he likes to go slow and he has the right to set the pace for everyone else. Bit like driving behind a caravan on country roads, it's only polite to pull over and let people pass.
I must read to the end of the thread before posting! I see Nick agrees. fools seldom differ!

Bit like driving behind a caravan on country roads, it's only polite to pull over and let people pass. I find that following close behind them and playing very loud "doofa doofa" music makes them suddenly realise they urgently need to stop for a cup of tea and let me pass - turn off "doofa doofa" music & keep on cruising........until catching up to next "grumpy old curmudgeon", which makes me realise I need to listen to "doofa doofa" music again.... repeat as necessary😉

We're the only boat on the move this morning. No worries at all about other boats/boaters. Although I would like to see someone throw the regional manager in the L&L with a pair of scissors to cut all the weeds!New cost reduction strategy - Let water levels drop so low the weeds all go brown and die. Then in the winter let the canal refill. Additional benefit - less wear and tear on locks if there are no boats............
