Yesterday I went to do my weekly shop at local Tescos. I regularly buy a box of beer which I normally leave in the trolley and get the cashier to scan it, save energy lifting it out and back in! Yesterday I got talking to a local bod whilst in the queue, loaded my groceries on the conveyor belt, packed n paid whilst talking about life in general, however when I got home & went thro the receipt, I saw that the beer box hadnt been scanned/paid for.
Now, I try to be a fine upstanding pillock of the local community, I dont break any laws (apart from regularly speeding) and abhor petty crime, burglaries, muggings etc, My concience says go back and pay for said beer, altho I cant really be arsed making another journey back there & Im concerned I could be given a stern talking to by the Security guards for shoplifting in front of the whole supermarket!
So..whats the proper thing to do? Go back and repent / cough up some cash or celibrate my good fortune at having a free beer?

I would say it's not coop so enjoy it.
you did it by mistake, and it's not a massive one, your not some coke head sick.
although the right thing to do is go back and offer to pay.

Free beer is never bad.
Nicking beer is bad but as you did it entirely innocently its going to be alright for your karma.
I personally believe that going back to pay for it would not be worthwhile and would make no difference.

Put something into a charity box? Tesco wont miss it. Agree with this.. driving back you'll use fuel/pollute atmosphere...just bung a few quid into some deserving cause.

If you'd found a tenner, looked around to discover no one was searching for it, my guess is you'd have celebrated your good fortune and moved on. You found unpaid for beer in your trolley ... it would be rude not to celebrate and move on, and the beers a natural celebration. Mind you, that doesn't apply if you do the same every week Rog

Much depends on the quality of the beer, cheap larger/cider - poor it down the sink or give it to a homeless person, any other larger/cider - take it to the nearest police station and tell them you have just nicked it, a quality ale - sit back and enjoy liberating a quality drink from the clutches of the capitalist system!

If you feel really bad about it, and if it's your regular Tesco shop, then you could tell them next time you'll be doing your shopping there about you un-planned leaving with a crate of unpaid beer, and ask them if they want you to pay for it now, or if they give it to you for your honesty and your fidelity to their shop. Easiest thing to do would be not to bother, and just hope that the idea of not having paid for them doesn't make you sick while drinking them . Peter. p.s. I don't think that there's a standard set age for becoming a shoplifter .
