Having lived in the area for a number of years I have heard the term Dyke applied to most of the middle levels and yes Mouse a tad harsh but I always put it down to ignorance. Though the Drainage Boards can be held to account for the use of the term "Drain" for anything holding water Phil

My mum came from the Fens (Heckington) and every time we visited relatives it was dads fav moan about the unfenced Dykes that ran alongside so many of the roads.....he thought they were just waiting for an unsuspecting motorist .....

My friends hubby used to be the GP there and when we me up once she told this story of a 'crazy woman' who set fire to her house in order to be rescued... I then told her the 'crazy woman' was my aunt..... I thought it funny but suspect she felt bit embarrassed ... My cousin still lives there somewhere but I didn't keep in contact with any of them after mum died.

Yes, a bus careered out of control in the opposite direction, driver of the bus did a runner, latest is he is holed up in a foreign country.

Its all to easy on those roads to overshoot/detour..they are often slippery with mud from tractor wheels...fences/hedges non existent in places..go to fast/brake etc Its not always the elderly/foreign/stupid or drunk. I used to hate travelling along them.
