You can take most of the effect of the wind out of the reckoning at locks by not farting about shutting any gates behind you, and by getting the boat right into the gates and stemming them before getting off to work a lock. Forget about using 'lock landings' completely, . . . they're just a pointless waste of time and effort. The one possible exception to shutting gates behind you is at the last lock before you tie-up, and only then when the gates and paddles at the end you left the lock from are noticeably/significantly leaking less than the other end. Thanks Tony, when you say 'stemming them' what do you mean (think I know but always wise to ask). As I get a bit more confident I'll try some of the tricks out.
Four locks done and moored up by 12, only ended up pined to the offside once! - lesson number 179, 16 tonnes and hurricane ( ) force winds are no match for a guy on the end of a rope!
Nice to meet you @bassplayer
Good luck with the trip and enjoy.

Does she lay on a bed out the back? No just on the 'grass' matting, will get her a bed to lay on. Hopefully it will help. Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks Tony, when you say 'stemming them' what do you mean I think it means sticking the nose of the boat into the V of the gates - but then how do you get off the boat?! For me, at Christmas, with flights of locks, my plan is to go into a lock and have the boat sit there, whilst I get the next one ready with gate open so I can just drive from the last into the next and have the boat penned in nicely whilst I walk back to finish up at the last lock (unless I just leave the top gates open...). It's going to be a lot of walking. Unless the canal is frozen and then we shan't be going nowhere at all!

Stemming is putting the front of the boat against the gates when going up. Followed by breasting the gates open by motoring forward. It is good practice on narrow locks but on GU wide locks if its just you the boat is liable to bang around quite severely as you open the paddles. Different people have different attitudes to hard contact of their boat with walls which is why for some people lock laybys can be useful. And the leakage between bottom gates on GU locls can be quite severe and get into the well deck.
As for walking between locks in flights I do this to set the next lock but I don't have a bow fender because they cause problems. And I always tie the boat off so that there is zero chance of cilling when descending while I'm not there to look at the boat.

Stemming is putting the front of the boat against the gates when going up. Which means the rest of the boat is surrounded by water. Do you run along the roof, jump onto the nose of the boat, and scale the gates using a rope and grappling hook? Yes, sometimes there are steps at the entrance of locks, so you can walk along the gunwhales/gunnels to access them. Landing locks are perfectly OK, and, as they may be some distance from the lock, the boat will be less affected by the rush of water exiting from the full lock when you open the paddles. I don't think it matters how you do your own lock, you've paid the licence fee, it's your toy. It is important to keep an eye on your boat all of the time to see how it is rising or descending, and to be aware of the whole general situation. There is a lot at risk, it pays to take it slowly and be vigilant.* * not Adam Ant's brother.

Yes but that was years ago and my SIS name obviously isn't going to be magnetman. They give you fake names. I've been given the name Abdullah McCormick. In my line of work it helps if people think I am a Muslim convert. Eta you would never put an identifying background in the photo (specially a Swiss school) and its worth having a name not searchable on Google.
