Over the 6 years I’ve been on the boat, the most common question I get from members of the passing public is “How long can you stay there?” or “Aren’t you only allowed to stay for 14 days”?
Rarely questions asking about the boat or where we’re heading. The question has never been asked in an aggressive way, more genuinely inquisitive.
It kind of adds to my belief that many people are charmed by the dream of living on a boat but see the 14 day rule as being very restrictive (which obviously it isn’t if you aren’t too committed to one specific area).
So what’s the most common question you get?

“What does Telly Matchus mean”?
Followed by the sound of pounding feet as I chase them off brandishing a mooring stake/windlass etc.
I mean really, “the people” are supposed to be in charge of important decisions such as staying or leaving the EU, and yet they have not the slightest grasp of the Classics. There is no hope for this country.

"Do you live on it?"
My boats all have a "lived in look". It even happens with my little 20ft Colvic in fact it happened day before yesterday up near Marlow. I just say no I live on a bigger boat (which is true).
To be fair at that point in time I was living on the Colvic as the fire was going and I had sustenance products. Only one or two nights a week though. Bit small for fulltime.

"Is it expensive to own a boat?"
"Where do you sleep and how do you cook?" - that one pisses me off - "inside and with an oven just like at home"
And like MM - "do you live on it?" er no.

So what’s the most common question you get? No one on EA waters that speak to us have the faintest idea about mooring restrictions. It certainly has never been a the first question I have been asked by someone lockside or whatever - they all seem to be keen to get afloat.

The other one I always get is "are you single handed?". Even when I have the ladies aboard I still do all of the boat handling and lock work myself because I prefer it like that. So while there are people on the boat with me I am still single handed.
