We KNEW all that, thanks x
I posted info about the Black Monkey of Bridge 39 a while back.... see if I can find it for you... hold on.... Here's the photo and accompanying text by me: photos.app.goo.gl/osc4ih6mkV6G5TJY6"Here's that telegraph thingy. Bridge 39 is reputedly haunted by a black monkey-like creature, the ghost of a boatman who drowned here in the mid 19th Century. So, we had the axe handy. Just in case." The so-called Man-Monkey of Bridge 39 on Britain's Shropshire Union Canal is a beast that has fascinated me for 20 years. And finally, last year, I was able to put all my findings together on the creature in my book of the same name: Man-Monkey. Described as looking somewhat like a large, aggressive chimpanzee, the beast has beast seen on numerous occasion since the late 1800s, in and around the woods that surround the infamous bridge. But, it was in the pages of Shropshire Folklore - written in 1891 by Charlotte S. Burne and Georgina F. Jackson - that the story was first brought to people's attention. As Burne's wrote: "A very weird story of an encounter with an animal ghost arose of late years within my knowledge. On the 21st of January 1879, a labouring man was employed to take a cart of luggage from Ranton in Staffordshire to Woodcock, beyond Newport in Shropshire, for the ease of a party of visitors who were going from one house to another. He was late in coming back; his horse was tired, and could only crawl along at a foot’s pace, so that it was ten o’clock at night when he arrived at the place where the highroad crosses the Birmingham and Liverpool canal. Whoosh! As they say when it just goes over someone's head. Yes, we KNEW all that, thanks .......

Last time I came through Hurleston locks was just before the millennium. I'm supposed to be going down Hurleston Saturday after next. 'Fenders up!' is on my fings-to-do list.

Boats always look better without fenders.

I have bought new strings (it's lawnmower starter cord) for our 8 fenders, and new steel washers for them which I still have to paint, first with red oxide, and then with a glossy, hard paint. Little job for the lonely evenings with the Black Monkey of Bridge 39 screeching outside.

I'll reserve judgment on that one I've met foxy in person (not in a boating context) and he is a good bloke. The bit in brackets is why I am reserving judgment !

Quite looking forward to making myself known to him if he's in the vicinity, though.
We'll probably both be in for a surprise!

We'll probably both be in for a surprise! Sat 22nd - late afternoon down Hurleston to Nantwich, shopping in Morrisons. Sun 23rd - bell ringing Nantwich, breakfast at cafe in Nantwich, sailing to Audlem. Mon 24th - skates on, 11 locks + 5 locks, off at dawn, Market Drayton by early evening - bell ringing? Tues 25th - bell ringing Market Drayton, then a cycle tour around Market Drayton. Evening spent painting fender washers Wed 26th - skates on again, 5 locks up, pass through Norbury Junction, destination Gnosall. Then the Witch joins me (bus service from Stafford, flying in to Manchester). Fri 28th possibly 10 hours non-stop to get to Trysull for more bell ringing.

Came down bumpy road from Prickwillow, slept in tent at hippy camp site in Eyez-lamb. Crumbs... started out from Stumpy's that morning - stopped in Tetbury - saw Stabby in Brinklow - 100mph down the A14... next morning breakfast in Portuguese cafe in Soham, wander around Ely, over to Gazza and up to Sabina at Fiskerton (Newark) - and then back to Gargrave via Knottingley and Ilkley.
