River Nene Strong Steam Advice due to be lifted at 09:00 tomorrow (Friday 28th) so plans are back on to give Fairlight a chance to stretch her legs. 2 different rivers 80 miles apart in 24 hours isn't bad

As I said, it's a 'stream', not the Mighty Mississippi, Nihilistic Nile or 'Orrible Orinoco.

Sign? What sign? We were joined by another club member shortly after we arrived at the king's head. mouse in charge - Mince pies, chocolate biscuits and a coffee on the way back. Heading upstream near Pear Tree Farm, 1 mph flow, a good 12" extra above normal winter levels.

I bought Pearson's new Nene guide. I haven't opened it yet, but am looking forward to doing so. I can't help thinking the Fens are pervaded by the smell of rotting cabbages. We will be there in 3 years' time.

Nope the Fens just smell of God's fresh air. Phil With a healthy dose of good ole 0muck n manure.... Interestingly enough when we moved to wildest Lincolnshire about 33 years ago mains drainage seemed to be limited to towns and bigger villages. The rest of us had to make do with cesspits and septic tanks. The Yellow Pages had a huge swathe of entries for Cesspit emptying services, it was considered a noble calling populated by happy jovial chaps. At the time it was common to see fields covered in very pretty mantles of coloured tissue. The "waste" collected was often pumped straight onto the fields. We were shocked at first but it dawned on us that it was no different to spreading slurry about. This process was known locally as "Dilly" spreading I doubt this practice continues today Phil
