I suppose Liverpool is going to be worse? We’ll see. Manchester and Liverpool are worlds apart, just like Glasgow and Edinburgh really. There is a completely different dynamic to both places. I've never liked Manchester, long before I went there by boat. For sure, many of the locals are kind, friendly and helpful, but there is a threatening undertone to the whole place which is completely absent in Liverpool. They are two totally different places which cannot be conjoined by the fact that both are "up North".

One of the best things about Liverpool is that you don't get all of the Bum Bandits that you get in Manchester.

(Sexist! ) I know one of them in Liverpool, also a few bum bandits. Cosmopolitan me. Nick, perhaps you need to lobby Age Concern to open gimmer friendly caffs. Tea, scones and thermal underwear.

Our only moan about Manchester, which you've already mentioned, is the lack of parks or open spaces. Unlike London, Birmingham, Manchester and even Sheffield, it is very tightly packed. But that does mean everything is fairly close.
The trams are terrific (poop poop).
The industrial museum, Rylands library, and art gallery are great ... we love Afflecks bazaar and the many Victorian pubs around the city.
But I'm not a fan of shopping centres ... and on a Saturday it can be hateful.
We went to Salford by tram from Castlefield. It looked terrific, but very sterile a bit like a film set.
But it's only been there a few years and may develop. However I would much rather travel into to Salford by tram (cheaper than £60) and moor in the city ... and at that price I suspect most boaters will feel the same.
Liverpool by boat is superb ... and there is so many options of things to do or see.

The same boats we saw in Castlefields on Thursday were still there yesterday afternoon and look like they will be there until evicted forcibly. In terms of spaces / different boats from Thursday there are about 3 spaces for visiting boats. Ok there is also Thomas Telford basin, but that is up the 9. Not sure about New Islington, that had a pretty bad reputation for a while, not sure if it is OK now. Manchester doesn’t really cater for visiting boats in the way Birmingham does. yes Salford Quays does seem sterile. I put it down to there being no boats at all (except ours). Which is very odd for a former dockland. On the plus side, that curse of modern boating - thoughtless people deciding they have to start and run their badly silenced engines at inappropriate times - is mercifully absent. Peace!

The moronic thing about Manchester is that there is no proper train connection between the two major railway stations Picc & Vic. You can go via Salford if you want to change (1 or 2 changes). I'd have thought a fast direct tram, or underground shuttle, would be a simple solution. We've been through/to Manchester many times, it's OK. No problems for us there yet. Finnair fly two times/day HEL-MAN direct.

Completed our chug up to the limit of navigation in central Manchester, and back. Actually Manchester from the river was quite pleasant in a weird sort of way!
Leaving our moorings:
Looking back towards Lowry liftbridge
Heading up the river
Pomona Dock/lock
Entrance to Manchester Bolton and Bury canal
Old link to Bridgewater canal, I think

Yes it's a pity Peel have made Castlefields almost all permanent moorings now. Last time we were there we got in outside the gym and youth hostel, but it's a bit 'fingers crossed' now. That's partly why I was interested in Trina mooring in Sale ... travel in on the tram We do like mooring outside the Trafford centre too ... not for shopping so much as just people watching ... endless fun. Went to look at the Manchester Bolton and Bury canal, well the first few hundred yards and 2 locks that are in water, anyway. Then went into central Manchester to do some food shopping. It was far less manic than yesterday and I would go so far as to say there are some nice bits!

Just completed our free pumpout. Only shame is it was only 3 days worth and so not a lot of shite came out. Which was kind of good because the entire and rather long hose was transparent, so whilst you could play “chase the turd”, it might have distressed the onlookers if it went on for too long.
