Have to agree about Lapworth volockies. There were 2 on at the top when we went down a few years ago & 2 boats going down.Setting ahead & re-setting locks meant that both boats 'flew' down. Never met them on that flight as I've only ever been there out of season but - in general - must agree, in the main these vollies are great. I have encountered some really lovely helpful ones and I'm certainly not out to knock them for the sake of it at all. A few years back one willingly helped me up most of the Napton flight (gave him a lift in the long pound and a cup of tea and biccies at Marston Doles so lost the time I'd saved but passed a pleasant morning!) - he really couldn't have been more helpful. Same at Hurleston earlier this year - so accommodating and genuinely out to assist. I've even helped a vollie clear a backlog of 40 odd boats after a stoppage to thank them for the help they'd given me ..... and was shocked to witness how few of the boaters actually thanked them for their help. Bit like life, really - or perhaps a box of chocolates? Have a good bank holiday all! Met x

So very sorry about the Lanky. Have you been to the museum before, Trina? Perhaps not if you're planning a day out ….!! Lovely enthusiastic guides though. The Chinese there is pretty good, I think I remember …. Enjoy the Weaver - hope to get be there again soon. Met x

Posted on t‘other channel:
Just come up Sawley. Volocky standing at his pedestal. Jeff greeted him as we entered, but got no reaction. Gates closing as I’m trying to hook the rope over the bollard - ropes slightly tangled so there were a few seconds of faffing. Volocky watched from his pedestal about 3 paces away, but did eventually take those steps and flip the rope over the bollard whilst looking at me as if I had “learning difficulties”. At that point it seemed to me that the top paddles were already partially open, but I wasn’t sure so didn’t say anything. Lock filled in silence with no interaction, gates were opened and we exited. Afterwards Jeff confirmed that he had partially opened the top paddles before the rope was over the bollard, and certainly without any contact with me. There is a large CRT sign saying “boaters must use ropes at this lock”. Once the situation was confirmed by Jeff I was sorely tempted to go back and remonstrate with him, but in the end couldn’t be bothered. So this Volocky was not following CRT protocol in a number of respects. And as for being an ambassador for CRT, being taciturn and slightly grumpy doesn’t really cut it! Clearly the guy just like pressing buttons. Probably was denied a trainset when he was a kid.

This Sawley Lock is an electrically-hydraulically-operated lock. I remember the instructions were badly written. We had to keep reading them but they made little sense. Apparently you have to keep pressing the button to continue the process (?). We were with another boater who had been there before and we did manage to fumble our way through. Perhaps someone could produce an Observer's Book to Volunteer Lockies, a bit like a train spotting book. There could be descriptions for each locky (eg. nice chap / miserable git) and boaters could have a new hobby ticking them off (the unhelpful ones in more ways than one!)! I think Nick has just posted that he would have no problems with vollies if they were all gay over on the other side, but I may have misunderstood what he meant.

I think Nick has just posted that he would have no problems with vollies if they were all gay over on the other side, but I may have misunderstood what he meant. How would that be a guarantee of anything at all, behavior wise? We'd then have hissy fits to deal with on top of the old grumpfuttock scowls. Still, it would look pretty if lock hardware was done with rainbow paint in the spare moments.
