Overhand granny knot loop ? Yes. Once tied, no way is that coming undone.

On the big multipaits I use for Sabina's mooring lines I put an eyesplice in each end (handy as sometimes it is both line and spring from the same bollard) (Also I haven't got a clue if it is even possible to do a back splice in multiplait)
On Shapfell I go for the eye at one end and the whipping at the other (although I don't usually bother using a sailmakers whipping like Andrew)

Its actually quite easy to put an eye splice in a rope and ive got to agree with jim on this it does make them "proper" working lines. Im not sure about andrews whipping prefering a back splice or another eye on the end. I have put large eyes on the ends of the centre lines on one of my boats but whenever I have done back splices I always found they tended to randomly get caught up when doing things with the rope that's why I settled on whipping. Although to be fair a backsplice is a nice end stop if you are sliding the rope through your hands. Another knot I have used now and then is the Manrope knot. Despite its name it's not BDSM related. It's basically a little ball on the end. First a wall then a crown then tuck up then tuck down. Like a mini monkeys fist. Looks like this (not my image)

All a bit posh for me, this splicing business. Last rope I got a formed a loop by tying a knot, did the job perfectly. Just use adhesive heatshrink!

As it's established that calling a boat 'she' is sexist it should follow that the Manrope knot is equally sexist. Ladies and gents, in the name of modern day equality and the wish to not offend anyone could we please, from now on, refer to the Manrope knot as the 'Personrope knot'. Thank you.

Ok. Can't argue with that. A personrope knot it is then.

I was pleased when I found this non specific ape-type mammal fist holding the door open at a charity shop. I asked is it for sale she said what do you want it for I said it's for attaching to boat ropes and throwing or knocking out burglars she said ok £2. It's a really good one. I think it's a genuine round stone job as it's quite weighty.

when you see something like that coming at you on the end of a heaving line ....... you don't try to catch it

We always look for round stones with the kids at the beach.
They call me the "roundstone cowboy"

You are welcome. I often feel I've little to contribute given that amongst you all there is such a depth of experience. However I'm a bit of a knot fetishist especially when it comes to the old way of doing things. Here's something useful if you are a rag and stick merchant: One thing I am keen on is a rig that requires no tools to set up and take down. What do you use them with?

I use the soft shackles to attach mooring and centre ropes to the rope eyes. I've only snapped one, a front fender had dropped down and caught on a lock gate, ping! They can be used anywhere you would use a shackle or carabiner, roughly twice as strong as the braid they are made from. An answer to "what do you want for christmas/birthday?" a set of fids please.
