As per title, it occured to me that if Scotland gets to leave the UK and stand on their own 2 feet, what amongst other things will they do about the NHS, and how will they afford to set it all up and so forth Phil

It's already a devolved matter - funding may or may not be an issue depending on any financial agreements between 'Westminster' and 'Holyrood'.

As Andy said they have NHS Scotland which is controlled by the Scottish government. I think they pay about a third of their budget into it.
I am unaware if that NHS Scotland budget covers the cost of free care for the over 65s and the loss of income from free prescriptions.
Which could potentially affect their budget severely if they leave the union.
Without taking away any chat on the NHS, a bigger question would be what currency would they use?
Would they keep the pound unofficially with no control over say interest rates or use the dollar because they will be oil exporters or even join the EU. I think they think they can join the EU and opt out of the Euro which I think new members can not do.

when the last shenanigans were going on there was a suggestion the Shetlands and Orkney might leave Scotland .... and take the oil with it after all they were actually pawned to the Scottish crown which has since refused to accept payment and return them ...... maybe something for the EU courts to ponder over

Interesting JohnV Could they not just declare themselves either a part of the union or independent and ask london for protection incase Scotland tries to invade and take them back.

There are some amazing entanglements in the relationships between various parts of the UK ..... it certainly didn't work out as the Englaland that Alfred the Great envisioned

But if they are Independent why would there be any dealings with Westminster? There would be no agreement, they might as well ask Germany or France to sub them , the would need to run it themselves and sort out prescription fees which they currently get for gratis that cost English patients £9-00 per item. Seems to me that opting for Independence would open up a bag of worms and like a bag of worms it'll get soggy and the worms will start dropping out..... slowly at first but as the bag gets soggier they will fall out more and more quickly Phil

If it was possible for two parts of a Union to separate easily then that would be great. (The UK wouldn't be looking to pay into the EU a rather serious amount of money either!)
