How about a compost loo? That must generate some heat. If you stored lots in boxes you'd be really warm. Anyone tried it?

I have to fess up, I am a serial hirer with aspirations to be a live aboard for a few years once retired. Sucks teeth! Can you steer in a straight line yet? š Yes i can! And i am ace at locking efficiently and planning so we moor up near a pub or restaurant for the evening. I can also cook a full welsh breakfast for 8 people in a narrowboat galley. I have also been held back from decking an obnoxious shiny boater.

Another interesting option is kickspace plinth heaters the ones which go under kitchen units. A lot of modern canal boats have fitted kitchen type units so there might be space. They are fan heaters so maybe not ideal but possibly worth considering. Ooh, I didn't even know those existed.
I'm (eventually) going to get around to having a hole (open inspection hatch) or two cut under the galley at the stern. Was thinking of under the fridge to aid bilge air circulation but under one of those would be fab. Not a 'cheap and easy' option but def on the wish list now I've seen them.

The boxes would have to be mutt-proof... FYI: Many posters on this forum do not consider compost toilets to be a good idea. Please disregard any comments concerning them, especially those made by Magnetman.

Compost toilets are a good idea in principle but the storage of material (the "rotting faeces") on board small boats is obviously going to cause some noticeable problems considering the fact that there is already a lack of space to start with.
If people want to live on boats and pretend it is not a boat then fair play but at some point the reality will kick in I suspect.

Have you ever heard of a pig toilet? Apparently a hole with a seat and a pig at the bottom.

Must say I have never noticed that shit disposal solution.
I'm still doing the technical calculations for my compressed air automatic freeze dried mortar system the "Out of Shite out of Mind" black water disposal unit specially aimed at boaters. Well you can aim it wherever you like but you know what I meant.
Depending on weather it looks like a range of about 1.43 kilometers is going to be feasible at an input pressure of 6 bar.
The most challenging part of the project is the conversion of waste material from the receiving unit to frozen cylinders of exactly the same repeatable size for the mortar.
An electronically controlled raw water pump will be needed to add bulk in most cases.

Compost loos are fine with acres of space (think Scottish estate) and if you aren't trying to get a child sized separator or failing to get a decent answer from any proponent of them as to which section menstrual blood goes in. They are f-all use (and even less 'composting') the way they are used on a narrowboat (without associated land). I mean, I genuinely like the idea but can think of very few UK domestic settings less suited to them than a flipping canal boat.

Must say I have never noticed that shit disposal solution. Apparently popular in parts of rural India. Users report that after a time the pig becomes excited when a user of the convenience appears, leading to an entirely novel experience for those unfamiliar with the system. I have not heard of what becomes of the pig in later life, but it is difficult to imagine how things could get worse.
