With boat water pumps it's always worth being a bit circumspect and applying the impact in an axial direction.
Whacking the motor casing from the side with a metal hammer could crack the magnets. While this is good for assuring the non viability of the product and helping with the binning procedure it can prematurely end the life of a unit which could have otherwise been serviceable given a little thump with a piece of wood.

To be honest I was joking about the hammer, just following a comment someone made. After thoroughly cleaning it again I used two cables and 'jump' started it. After a couple of times the motor clicked on.
