Outsourcing is very sensible on stuff that only gets used very occasionally. Most of the 'trouble' comes when you outsource routine stuff. Yup, all the outsourcing of routine unscheduled maintenance simply inserts a middleman to make profit from the jobs, thus increasing costs. It also saves the original 'management' from doing too much as well.......... makes life so much easier.....

The contractors sub contract it out again, so the sub contractors have to cut corners to make a profit. The consequence being that an inferior quality job costs twice as much as it should.

And going back to Nick's post, the 'cut' nearly always falls on the workers wage and conditions of employment rather than anywhere else. Overall cost remains the same (or is lowered) for the 'management' but pay/work conditions of the workers decreases.

Management's task is to maximise profits for the shareholders and managing director(s). And then leave to another cushy job (or retire with a handsome golden handshake) before there's a Parliamentary enquiry... which, after all, will only reveal the Universal Truth that "lessons must be learned".

I thought I'd go and report a missing paddle I came across yesterday, on a lock they've just spent 2 weeks repairing, putting a new oak floor in it. I can report emergencies, litter weeds and pollution or an incident, accident or near miss. However, tellingly, infrastructure faults, necessary repairs, don't have their own designated contact. Perhaps they don't want to know, or are getting so many it's been shut down. I'll go by the emergency route then! I've only started my travel, am on the Chesterfield, they have been using untreated wood for structures, rotting footbridge/rotting lock walkways, what nonsense is this? Are no inspections carried, the two I mentioned are glaringly obvious, must have been like that for a very long time, the walkways over the locks are downright dangerous.
