I always wave at Eddie Stobart lorries. When travelling on the River Great Ouse it runs parallel to the A10 for a while And when you don't it doesn't?

I've got to admit I assume everyone is going be nice and friendly until proven other wise... and even then, I won't give in until I solicit a response - in one form or another. Perhaps it's to do with being brought up in a country village where EVERYONE acknowledged everyone else... be them stranger or acquaintance.
A bit like Rog, I can't help but say hello to folks on the towpath, hight street or wherever really - it always seems to get on the current Bosun's nerves but it's just friendliness rather than pretending folks are invisible.
Occasionally, some miserable old sod (or sodette) try their hardest not to respond... at which point I presume they are a bit death/ginger-ist and just shout/wave that little bit louder/more enthusiastically.
There are a lot of grp owners that quite frankly look like they are stoned/trollied but they generally are very friendly either way - There are also a lot of abandoned plastics that should be dragged out and torhced on the spot.

I thought torhced a tad unkind

I always wave at Eddie Stobart lorries. a toot on my mega horn I like tooting at canal bridges whenever I spy a car approaching. I don't mind waving at bus drivers, but a lot of truck drivers wave at me too, presumably because we are 'professional drivers', but there are so many trucks it gets silly so I ignore them... perhaps out in the wilds I'll lift a hand to a truck driver, but not on the main roads or in the city. Might as well get one of those Asian pussycats whose arm goes up and down all the time.

there are so many just abandoned wrecks around - presumably un licensed/insured and quite often tied up somewhere that would otherwise be a nice place to moor up... it really irks when I've been back and forth for a few months and see the same wrecks in the same places, with nothing being done about them. It's just not cricket.

Might as well do it properly and have 'blown up'! www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/18805663.explosion-houseboat-grand-union-canal-hunton-bridge/?ref=fbshr&fbclid=IwAR0nvviHFp0BYCBSAT7cy8n0fBw9pfZPj_BPuGScJrxewkUR82Jqv25Zcdo"Boat Safety expired end of Sept."

I think to be fair I will have to manage my waving-expectations better.
To strike a more serious note (momentarily), the truth is everyone is different, and there are lots of blokes especially who are not given to extravagant demonstrations of emotion, or emotional gestures.
As Brummieboy suggested, not every muted greeting means they are reluctant or miserable, and it was wrong of me to suggest otherwise, even in a joking tone. Some chaps are just muted in the way they communicate.
Anyway, can I find a chandler who sells public address bullhorns? I think if I can just turn up the volume a bit (well a lot), I may startle the more reserved boaters into giving a more lively reply. That or I'll be arrested.
PS- I also unreservedly apologise for any comment made in this or any other thread that could be construed as Hattist.
Especially since it is my intention to purchase an early Napoleonic era tricorn hat and a duelling pistol to celebrate my arrival on the Shroppie.

When passing boaters wave at me, I give them a deranged and murderous glare back. Unless their boat is called "Telemachus" in which case I bellow "TellyMackus!!!" at them at the top of my voice.

Since getting Freya almost everyone stops to say hello Before then Id say good morning to most people but often ignored..I put it down this year to Coronageddon fear of infections. However a lanky, clumsy puppy that seems to want to be everyones friend has melted so many peoples normal reserve.

I've always been into waving at other boaters who, one must assume, are boating in order to have a generally good time. I don't fully understand why people would be boating in order to not have a good time because boating is so enjoyable. However over the years things have changed. this could be to do with the increase in people occupying boats and viewing the moving of the boat as a seriously irritating bi-weekly chore. A lot of younger boat owners seem to just do a little nod where waving was more common in days gone by. That's my observation anyway. bi-monthly

Oh yes. Bloody hell I must stop leaking CRT secrets like that kris will accuse me of working for them, again, if I do tell people in advance of the press release that the 14 day rule is going to be shortened to 7 days under the t&c. Not sure when the press release is yet !
