When we ran Tadworth and Alton they had PD2 engines which were air cooled engines that BW put in most of the fleet. They were B'stards to hand start and the cooling was fan driven in trunking with a wire mesh on the front. The boatmen called them chip fryers. Nothing really good about them and Tadworths broke the crankshaft whilst ticking over in Atherstone top lock. Parts were difficult to say the least. when we brought Crane from Willow Wren it had a lister ST 3 which seemed wrong somehow bit pushed it along fine and gave no trouble. Put a PDW3 in Tadworth which came from aTrinity house generator set and had a keel cooling pipe run round under the counter didn't change the prop and it really flew on the Thames. My old barge had a GM 2 stroke in it when we brought it and I learnt that it was aRussian engine made for a tank in WW2. Strong thing but parts difficult and you couldn't see the village when it started up, the smoke never really went away and cyclists went past holding their noses. changed for Perkins 130 and boy is it lovely to have no oil or fuel leaks and a clean engine room. The H series listers are the best of that breed with the Nationals still going well but be careful what you wish for

Love the noise !!! Ain't so keen on the fumes though The Lister on Clarence has a clean exhaust once warmed up. One important thing with any engine with a vertical exhaust is to cap the exhaust when the engine is not being used. If you don't the exhaust gets the rain in it and yes you get a good smoke until the water have been evaporated by the engine heat. If it's a semi diesel you also get various sized soot balls aaaaaannnndddd then if you work the motor hard they heat up to red hot & pepper the cabin top & steerer Need a trilby hat with a big brim to stop them going down your neck. red hot soot balls the size of malteasers are funny except to any one in the fall out zone
