Genuine question - this is not anti-immigrant in any way. Can anyone explain to me why its a good thing for the country's population to continue to expand at the rate it is? Taking birth rates, immigration, ageing population etc, we must be adding the equivalent of a major city every 3-4 years. Why is this good? Is it to support the older folks? To keep the economy growing? Some other political issue? That question could be applied to the world as a whole. It's not good for the planet, that's for sure. Let's put it this way, the more worker ants there are, the richer the elite get.

Firstly to support the ageing population and secondly because western economies need constant growth to survive. It is not good to need constant growth but to get away from it would require a complete overhaul of how this country works. In its current state, if the growth stops the economy will collapse.

If that is the case cant we leave next week and save the country a whole heap of money saving a sinking ship? I mean its a pointless exercise so its pointless wasting money on them plus it would put the poisoness dwarf back in her box

because the economic principles adopted by most of the world's countries rely on Growth, Growth, Growth. it's bollox. In some ways I agree .... in other ways I don't There is nothing wrong per se, with growth, it's how that growth is achieved. Huge increases in productivity can be achieved by automation. Either directly replacing labour or by providing tools that labour can use to increase production. This is increasing production without increasing the workforce. The problem with this type of growth is that you end up with workers being "on the scrap heap" This is outrageous both from the point of waste of human resources and on the inhuman treatment of the people concerned. There is a vast range of activities that could be totally automated and the list is growing day by day and it is something that society is going to have to face very very soon. There is no way a society can thrive when a larger and larger proportion of the population has no productive capacity and no goal in life. What's the answer ........ Don't ask me ......... I just ask the questions

I was reading about IA and robotics the other day John it is a road to nowhere for the population, it will destroy our way of lie completely. I dont know what the answer is either but mass migration to this country is most definitely not the answer so the quicker its sorted out the better

the need for growth inevitably leads governments to encourage increased population.
most growth involves higher consumption of limited natural resources.
growth as it is practised by most countries in the world consumes more energy leading to increasing pollution.
I recall the last episode of Planet Earth where Attenbrough concluded that a stable global human population should be about 1 billion, to be in balance with the rest of the planet's flora and fauna.
Growth is an obscene ambition and should be outlawed like excessive CO2 emissions

Italians will go to the polls to vote over constitutional reforms during the landmark referendum on Sunday December 4. If the people of Italy vote No, the referendum result could be the latest blow to the crumbling international world order. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has promised to resign in the event of a no vote, which could trigger fresh elections in Italy. If the anti-establishment Five Star Movement party seizes power in the election, it will hold a referendum on Italy’s membership of the eurozone. This would pave the way for quitting the euro, plunging the eurozone into chaos and leading to the disintegration of the EU. Will Italy deal the next big blow to the crumbling international world order?

If ever it were needed, Italy is the perfect example of why PR doesn't work.

I was chatting to people about this when in Rome, people realise the importance of this vote the hotel reception lady was voting for the reforms but she told me plenty of have nots were going to vote no, role on a no vote

Two forks?: 1. Italy, run by the Mafia, is a net beneficiary of the EU, they're getting all those agricultural grants. What does Italy produce? Fiats and baked beans. I think they will vote 'Stay In' as they'd be cutting off their source of free cash flowing in like a waterfall. Italy is a country full of lazy people who don't clear up their rubbish - go and look. 2. Italians are fed up with the influx of 'Syrian War Refugees' (who turn out to be from everywhere but!) and Romanian gypsies. I think they will vote 'Out'.
