Well I had a very lucky escape earlier.
I was using a "Suaoki" lithium jump pack to start one of my engines as the battery was a bit low.
Got the engine going and I forgot to remove the pack. It was resting on the gearbox.
Anyway a few minutes later I heard an odd noise so I closed down engine, looked in engine room the jump pack was split open and smoking a bit.
So (this is where I was a LUCKY FUCKER) I climbed down engine room ladder, picked it up by the leads and took it outside and hung it off the side of the boat (steel boat) out of the way, went back in engine room to check everything and there was a WOOOM and a big flame shot out of it.
Proper thermal runaway that was. A real one.
Lucky bugger is me.
I had lost the original leads for it so made up my own ones with Anderson plug.
I suspect the original leads had a fuse...
Oh dear.
Bye bye jump pack.
Moral of the story DO NOT LOSE THE ORIGINAL LEADS.
mind you I am always happy to have this sort of slightly ridiculous experience and get away with it. Now I know what a lithium battery thermal runaway looks like.
It's not ideal.
Definitely not nice if it had gone up inside the engine room.

Unfortunately the live part detached and fell in the River. While this is obviously incredibly damaging to nature and will probably alter the future of humans irreparably I reckon it might have been better than it ending up in the boat. The flame was about 3 ft high

What sort of lithium battery was it? Lithium polymer is much more unstable and flammable than LiFePO4.

Definitely a lipo pouch When I carried it out of the boat the casing was split open and I could see the pouch ballooning and issuing smoke with a hissing noise. Definitely not a happy battery.
I'm just rather glad this thing didn't go up in my face.

Its strange this. My mate James tried all ways to get a lithium Polymer pouch cell to catch fire, overcharging, short circuit and hitting it with large point object achieved nothing!! I have whatsapp videos of it somewhere, but these are quality cells so it does make me wonder?

It is a bit of an odd one. The wires are not melted as expected from a short and also not very thick.
I'm wondering if it falling down onto a hard surface somehow interfered with the integrity.
It certainly did go up properly.

What's the difference between a battery and a woman?

You can't short out a woman.

What's the difference between a battery and a woman? I know better than to poke anything in any hole on a battery.

Cheap enough if you feed them on old duck bread. Set about it tomorrow, before your luck runs out.

Yeah, because you have to be clever to fuck up like that.
