Finally gown sick of my semi broken laptops and ordered a new one. I don't understand computers, don't really want to, they bore me stupid, but I'm aware I should have at least a rudimentary antivirus program. Googled 'best free antivirus' but soon switched off, baffled by the enormity and confusion of the information offered.
Could anyone suggest a basic, free antivirus that downloads easily, won't cause headaches, that just works?

I used to use AVG, which didn’t slow the laptop as much as Norton etc, but lately I’ve only used the windows one.

Malwarebytes is deffo a good bit of kit to run every now and then, just to clear up cookies and crap that can slow down the pc.

And as previously mentioned, CCleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner are worth having (both free). Although I suspect that the paid-for versions of any of the well-known 'anti' suites will do all of that too.

The best advice for Ricco is not to install anything you don't know, or open any crap in an email if you don't know the sender.
The only time I have had issues with virus's is when downloading dodgy software/music or films.
If you are just browsing the web/banking/emails then the standard windows defender will be fine.

For what it's worth, even back when I worked in IT and installed 'proper stuff' on servers - deployed via group policy to client machines, I STILL used (and continue to do so) Avast. IT doesn't clog you up as much as most of the other ones and occasionally, I even buy a year of the upgraded version to have a bit of a tidy up.

New computer up and running. It hasn't crashed yet, I think that's a first. Not going to bother with any anti virus.
Surprisingly good service from Currys/ PC World. Ordered Saturday, came today within the promised 1 hour time slot. No extra for delivery.

Could anyone suggest a basic, free antivirus that downloads easily, won't cause headaches, that just works? A wise man once said that the best form of anti-virus is to run an operating system other than Microsoft Windows. The wise man also said that the second best form of anti virus is the one installed on the opposite side of the keyboard to the screen - someone who thinks before clicking or pressing the enter key, does not automatically make assumptions about an email from a friend and checks that a website is secure etc. Assuming you will be running Windows 10, the built-in Defender anti-virus software is preferable for a number of reasons. This has not always been the case but Defender has improved tremendously over the years. I would advise against running a second antivirus program at the same time 'just to make sure'. However, running alternative scanning software such as malwarebytes once a month is a good idea. I am in two minds about CCleaner (was called Crap Cleaner years ago!) for the novice. Very very good at cleaning up the registry (remember to use the facility to back up the registry before running it!) but care needs to be taken when installing and running. The above is based on many years helping to run a residents group for older, non technical users. It largely reinforces what has already been said.

I have never, ever, engaged with the tedious 'backup' features, nor ever had any problems. CCleaner is great at eliminating cookies and a few other things but the registry cleaner part of the program is total bollocks. Honestly, Wise Registry cleaner is far better. Anyway, standard stuff from Ricco - ask for help and reject all advice for what he knows is better and never a word of thanks. Great.

I just use a phone. No computer, no tablet just a phone.
And it's a pretty crap one Xiaomi "we are watching you" Redmi 7A.
Bulletproof.
And never any trouble apart from burglars but that is not a software problem.
