I only got an ultrasound hull survey so I knew how much steel was there was or wasn't there. As that's the only thing I couldn't check myself π

I think the survey is largely for peace of mind ... if you're spending Β£40 - 60,000 and only have a basic understanding of steel hulls and engines , I believe it is money well spent.
Some issues are not readily apparent, and survey findings can assist in price negotiations.
But it would be a mistake to think because you had a survey you have any redress should problems develop.

Not only good for staying Covid free, . . but with the addition of an ultra-sonic thickness tester, it would also save you the cost of docking or slipping for a hull survey ! Can it judge whether one is clever enough to keep one's boat?

Hi Foxy, can you provide a link for that please, do not see anything on the website? What - you're not one of those "anti-maskers" are you? Everyone knows these days that you should wear at least one face mask to "protect others" in the midst of a deadly pandemic. People are wearing masks in the same way that people wear religious symbols. They'll never take them off, no matter what studies prove they are ineffective. It's their religious symbol now. Annoint yourself with the holy hand sanitiser and don the mask of compliance with the cult. So that would be a no then, guess you made it up?

There is a risk in any transaction. You can write a contract which duplicates a broker contract and get it signed by both parties. Two copies of course. Do not assume all brokers are honest, reasonable, or reliable, ditto for vendors. The worse thing on my boat is the corner cutting painting, this would not have shown on a survey, also the Boat Safety Certificate was unsafe, but signed by a surveyor with lots of letters after his name. I bought a boat built by a good builder, that was my number one priority, obviously it looked reasonably looked after, the big downside was owner fit out, but the price reflected that, if you can't do some DIY etc, make sure you buy a good boat with a good fit out.

loddon, did I read somewhere you are on the EA waters? I am now, after 30++ years on ditches. When we bought Loddon it was on EA waters and was trucked back to BW waters I am originally from the Fens so we may look for a long term mooring in the future but initially, cruise around the waterways, are all the moorings 48hrs? Another thing I wanted to know, I realise there is the winter flooding risk so are some marinas flood proof?

The one I am in can take about 2metres above normal levels, it has been 1.9 metres above, rather disturbing when you have to walk up to get onto the floating pontoon;)
