Approaching Newbold tunnel yesterday and whilst still about 200 yards away, a boat emerged displaying a bright white LED tunnel light, like a strip of light.
The light was dazzling even then ... I would hate to meet anything so bright whilst in a tunnel .
I can only assume the LED lights are much brighter than the old bulbs.
Anyone got one and knows how much stronger ?

The light from a tunnel light is supposed to be directed at the walls of the tunnel so it was probably just a generic spotlight.

Ours is LED and directed at the roof. Suits us just fine and doesn’t impact on passing boats.

They vary just like the old sort but are often measured in lumens instead of watts...the more the brighter. Also it depends on how many LEDs (a strip light might have as many as a dozen) and the term 'cree' apparently is good but I have no idea what or indeed why that might be. I am fairly sure it has nuffink to do with injuns.

They are the work of the devil. No sort of focussing, they just spray brilliant white light everywhere. Some people are just so stupid and thoughtless. But of course they are also cheap, which is probably the major selling point. I think I will get an especially bright one which I can switch on at short range and shine into the face of any oncoming boater at short range. Or maybe a laser would be better.

They don’t spray light everywhere, the light goes where the lamp is pointed, obviously!

Wow ! I know the headlight should be on the roof and to the right ... I know everyone can choose what they have and in one way tunnels it won't matter. I was wondering how bright the LED lights were. My headlight is a small single halogen bulb type, not very bright and gives off a yellowish light like old car headlights . I'll do some googling and see if I can answer my own question ... just trying to encourage chat that doesn't involve the resident prophets of doom Rog

An upside down dipped beam headlight works well. The flat cut off is set above oncoming eyeline and the slope bit illuminates the tunnel wall on your side.

I was also looking at a fully focusable spot the other day that used a rear facing lamp ..... it was designed for theatrical work but I am sure there must be other exterior types

55w ... 6000 lumens. Guess this is the sort of thing I saw. Rog This totally unsuitable as it is designed to light an enclosure like a patio. LED spots work very well and properly directed do the right job. Of course, they can always be installed like the searchlights on Hudsons Shiny Boats because they are traditional and the whole circumference of the tunnel needs to be like daylight. I recall an acquaintance who replaced the filament bulbs on a Jaguar because they did not let him travel at 70+ mph in the dark. The halogen replacements burnt out the wiring loom to the lights.

Unsuitable or not, it's sold as a tunnel light (in the written description) and folks will use it as such no doubt. My headlight was ripped off and stolen on the Bridgewater canal, I had to get a replacement to get off the canal (three tunnels to get through) so called at Thorne Marine at Stockton Heath. I bought his smallest, cheapest headlight (£19) and wired it up intending to replace it later ... that was about ten years ago. It does the job and couldn't dazzle anyone even if I tried Rog
