I agree with Ian, the thought of selling a house to buy a boat that will always drop in value to boat around a system that is rapidly failing, and doesn't show any signs of improving under the current leadership is a scary thought!
Not sure how old and fit you are but worth thinking health in your old age, some manage ok when they are really old, like Rog for example, a fit man for such an age, can carry two leisure batteries!

I feel i've got to justify everyone's concern. We won't be boating around the canal system as such, we want to find a nice quiet mooring to act as a base to have cruises, it wont be on the CRT system. Yes I am very fit, don't drink, never smoked, exercise regularly and not overweight. Even if we do it for 5 years and we've had enough, we will move back onto land like most people probably do. If we don't do it now I know i'll regret in in a few years when I am too old. Thanks for everyone's input, I think this thread should be laid to rest. Not being funny but I only wanted some advice on logistics, not having to justify why I want to live on a narrowboat.

And Tony was still living on a boat until CRT booted him off. He's got to be a nonagenarian.

Welcome to TB threads - you don't allways get what you like!........
BTW one of my neighbours when I'm at 'home' is over 80 and has been on the mooring for around 35 years. She will never move back 'on land' except in a coffin shaped box.

Its a discussion forum Paul, we are here to discuss, sometimes a thread may wonder off, well most of the time on here, but also its advice from people who have done it, you may not like what you are advised but remember its just advise, nothing more.
Make of it what you will.
Try asking the same question on Canal world, bet you wont enjoy the thread over there.

If you put something 'out there' you have to accept it's going to be discussed by folks not in possession of all the facts.

Indeed and it is important not to assume things.
I for example assumed he only had one leg and therefore mobility could be a problem.
Unwise assumption.

I’d think very carefully before selling your house. Have you looked at the possibility of renting it out, then using the rental money to pay for a loan on a boat? Believe me we have done, having rented out a previous house and had loads of grief, not getting rent and having the house basically trashed we don't want that again. All the time we would be on a boat we'd just be worrying and wondering what was happening in the house and that would spoil the whole boating experience. I know some people are only trying to give advice(apart from the negative one) but we have been planning this for years. It's not as though we've never lived outside of a house, we lived in a small 2 berth caravan through a cold winter then 2 years ago we toured full time in a campervan for nearly a year so we know what problems can arise with that type of lifestyle. I experienced similar with a rental property. £15K out of pocket and god knows how much it cost me in mental anguish. It is a big step to sell a house and buy a boat. My opinion, for what it's worth: If you're going to do this, right now is an excellent time. I believe that house prices are about to experience a huge crash.

Thanks and sorry to hear about that, I think until you experience something like that you won't understand and you are right, it's mental anguish as much as anything. To back up what you say about house prices, 2 different estate agent's told us the same thing recently so maybe there is an element of truth in that. By the way we've only been in this house 6 months and it's been valued at £12.5k more than we paid so we could be onto a nice profit.

But thanks again for your positive input.
